Barnard College
University Information
Barnard has a rich history and tradition of study abroad dating back to the 1930s. Today, students study abroad in more than 35 countries, from Australia to Tibet. This site details the opportunities available, online resources, and procedures to apply. Please review the information on the website before meeting with the Dean for Study Abroad.
One of the best ways to learn more about what study abroad can offer you academically and personally is from other Barnard students who have studied abroad or who are currently abroad. We invite you to link to reach out to Barnard students who have studied abroad to ask questions about their experience and research which program is right for you.

"It was the most worthwhile experience of my College career. I understand myself in more ways than I did before, both positive and negative aspects, but I have found a sort of inner peace from all of the traveling that I've done. I feel more at ease with myself."
Reni C Barnard College
"My study abroad experience was definitely worthwhile. I made many great friends from all different backgrounds (two of my best friends were a biochem major and a finance major). I almost feel as if I am an honorary Greek. I learned the importance of taking time to smell the flowers, essentially, and that Greeks do what they want..."

Naina S Barnard College
"This question is difficult to answer just because my study abroad experience was more than worthwhile. I would never change where I went or when I went. I wish I was still there. It completely changed my attitude toward life, what I value, how I view things and what I want to do in the future."
Kayla W Barnard College
"Absolutely. Living in a different city is a good experience to have. The French were much nicer than people make them out to be, especially if you make an effort to speak French."
Karen K Barnard College
"I learned a lot more about what type of a place I want to live in and what is important to me. "
Carly S Barnard College

"Yes, it was worthwhile. I love the city itself, and I feel like I got just the right amount of culture shock. People were generally polite and I learned a lot about the system of education here."
Victoria L Barnard College
"It was definitely worthwhile. I think I have a greater confidence in myself and have learned so much (not just academically). "
Genta S Barnard College
"This is honestly a very easy program to enjoy. I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied. The dollar is VERY strong here, so you can easily live like a king, or at least live comfortably if you're under an extremely tight budget. If you want to party, alcohol here is absurdly cheap. If you hate Budapest, you can leave for a bra..."
Rachel J Barnard College
"My experience was very worthwhile...It was great to experience life in a smaller city, and I made lots of friends from all over the world. I gained a new perspective on my time at college and learned to take more time to enjoy myself and the city I am in while I have the chance to - without letting school work stress me out."
Talia B Barnard College
"Absolutely. Before the program, I knew almost nothing about Chinese culture and customs. Now, I'm considering moving to China after I graduate."
Luyang L Barnard College
"YES. My study abroad experience had a huge impact. I could literally feel the difference in my eyes when I returned and looked around. "It changed the way I see" is a silly claim to make, but I certainly felt that my perspective was wisened. It wasn't easy, at times, but it taught me a lot and allowed me to understand what I n..."
Danielle D Barnard College
"It may sound cliched, but I know I've grown so much as a student and person from my study abroad experience. I now know I have the self-discipline, independence, and open mind that are necessary for new academic and personal experiences. I also met so many incredible people who are not only intelligent, but also friendly and fun..."
Aimee M Barnard College
"I will go back to Sevilla to visit my host family. They were one of the sweetes people I have ever met. I realized the difference of race preceptions that Americans have verses Europeans which will help me write my thesis this coming senior year."
Daysy A Barnard College
"I learned so much about myself. I grew into a lot of things as a person, and I learned to love a culture that's different from my own and feel at home in it. It was 100% worthwhile."
Elizabeth P Barnard College
"I learned an incredible amount about living in another country, a lot about another culture, and a great deal about conducting scientific research."
Jennifer B Barnard College
"I thought going abroad was the best decision I ever made. I had the most amazing semester and changed/grew in every way possible. It was better than I could have ever hoped for."
Leora K Barnard College
"I know I am an actor now and BADA made me realize I am the only one standing in my way. Being in London and BADA made me feel like I could take on the scary prospect of going out into the real world next year after college as an actor and theatre artist."
Kimberly S Barnard College
"Definitely. I feel more comfortable in my own skin than I ever have before."
Rosemary B Barnard College
"My experience abroad not only exposed me to the political, economic, and social environment of Spain but made me more aware about what is going on in my own country. My experience was definitely culturally relative; we were always comparing America with Spain/Europe, but that did not stop us from becoming accepted as honorary ma..."
