University of Oxford - Visiting Students

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. I think I have a greater confidence in myself and have learned so much (not just academically).

The term and year this program took place: Full-Year 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Although Oxford is very challenging, I had a great time here. I met some great people, traveled around Europe and found myself more independent and free than ever.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I got a single room in Isis off Iffley Road. It was about a ten minute walk from the main college campus but I didn't mind it.

Good overall. The rooms were pretty big and were kept clean. A 10 minute walk from the main area of the city. Sheets, pillow and comforter provided.

* Food:

Food was ok but there were restrictions on how much you can have.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Great! Unforgettable

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I think min 20 pounds maximum 50.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Obviously if you are planning to travel you will spend much more than if you just stay in England.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? You must have very good time management skills and be able to balance work with fun. Do not bring too many things with you and take advantage of the fact that you are in Europe and travel can be so cheap (especially with easyjet and ryanair).

Philosophy of Mind

Comments: This was one of the most challenging courses I took at Oxford. Dr. Wilk really encourages you to think for yourself and the topics are very interesting. You begin to reason in a new way.

Cognitive Psychology

Course Department: Psychology
Instructor: Dr. Styles

Comments: Although initially I struggled with this course, mainly because the system here is so individually driven (you get little to no guidance from your tutors), I soon found the tutorial very interesting and Dr. Style's comments helped me improve my writing significantly.
