Students who want to study abroad in Shanghai with API will take their courses at East China Normal University (ECNU). This program offers elective courses in English along with Chinese language electives and an internship opportunity. ECNU – a national renowned university under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Founded in 1951, it is nationally accredited by the Ministry of Education of the PRC and a member of the prestigious 211 and 985 projects. Boasting one of the most beautiful university campuses in China, the university is reputed as the “garden university.” ECNU is a research university with an extensive range of disciplines including education, social sciences, humanities, natural sciences & technologies and administrative sciences. ECNU currently enrolls more than 30,000 students from all parts of China and abroad, of which more than 5,000 are international students.

API students at ECNU can study abroad for a semester or summer term, and take courses in English and Mandarin Chinese. ECNU also offers a great internship opportunity in business, NGO administration, social services, and other areas. Students can combine an internship with other elective and language courses. more information can be found on our website. 

East China Normal University Programs:


  • Semester Chinese Language Studies:  Students in this program will be immersed in Chinese language instruction for 18 weeks, and can expect to earn upwards of 20 semester credits for the standard Chinese language program (or up to nearly 30 semester credits if they elect to pursue the intensive Chinese option for an additional fee). The instruction stresses the equal importance of listening, speaking, reading, and writing Chinese, in order to lay a solid foundation for students learning. Classes are generally no larger than 20 students, and meet for 20 hours per week.


  • Chinese Language and Culture Studies:  Students in this program will have the option to take an Chinese language course alongside elective courses in English or take all courses in English with credits ranging from 12 to 16. In addition, students are also able to take an optional for-credit internship alongside three elective courses or two electives and one language course. This option does carry an additional fee but is offered for 4-6 US credits.


  • Summer Chinese Language Studies: Students in this program will participate in a small Chinese language course in addition to a Chinese cultural course (conducted in English) for a total of 4 semester credits over a four-week period. Students who are interested in earning additional credit may add a 5th week for an additional fee.

API is pleased to support students who are the first in their families to attend a college or university. The First Generation Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750 per session and is available for academic year, quarter/semester, and summer students.

This scholarship is offered to API participants who attend a community or technical college in the U.S., and awards range from $250 to $750 per session.

The API STEM scholarship is offered for API participants who are studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The API STEM Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750 and is available for academic year, quarter/semester, and summer students.

In order to be eligible to apply, students must meet the following requirements: Have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher. Major in an area classified as a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics). Special consideration will be given to students who are taking courses related to their major while abroad. Show financial need. Letter of recommendation Two essays

API is proud to provide a diversity scholarship in order to support students from a variety of backgrounds. The API Diversity Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750 and is available for academic year, quarter/semester, or summer students. In order to qualify for this scholarship, students must be one or more of the following: a U.S. military veteran, a non-traditional student (30 years old or older), a student with a disability, a minority student, and/or a LGBTQ student.

It is not an easy task to juggle the demands of college athletics with academic responsibilities while pursuing other interests on campus. API supports both current and college-bound student-athletes participating on our programs. We welcome student-athletes across all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA to apply.

Guidelines/Requirements:
Only for student-athletes across all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA. Students applying must also have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and submit a letter of recommendation and two essays.

The API regional scholarships (Asia/Middle East, Europe, Latin America) provide awards that range from $250 to $800 per session. All API students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is both need and merit-based. We will review your academic record, essays and financial need as stated in your own words. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer students.

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Students participating in an API program who have been awarded a Gilman scholarship will be eligible to receive up to $1,000 in matching contributions from API for a study abroad program, or up to $500 in matching contributions from API for an intern abroad program. To receive this award, Gilman winners should indicate their scholarship details on their financial aid information after acceptance to an API study abroad program.
