University Information
Barnard has a rich history and tradition of study abroad dating back to the 1930s. Today, students study abroad in more than 35 countries, from Australia to Tibet. This site details the opportunities available, online resources, and procedures to apply. Please review the information on the website before meeting with the Dean for Study Abroad.
One of the best ways to learn more about what study abroad can offer you academically and personally is from other Barnard students who have studied abroad or who are currently abroad. We invite you to link to reach out to Barnard students who have studied abroad to ask questions about their experience and research which program is right for you.

"The assessments were more intense, so I learned more about managing my time to balance out my work and "play" schedule. I think I came out of the experience a more independent person who isn't afraid of doing things other than work because it "would waste my time" - i.e. found a more balanced lifestyle than I would've allowed m..."

"It was definitely worthwhile - I gained Spanish language skills, learned about the history and culture of Spain, was pushed to reflect and think about issues I may not encounter in my life at school in the U.S., and I gained experience with independent traveling. "

"Completely worthwhile. You cannot beat going somewhere and learning from people who have had such different experiences than your own. I learned about forgiveness and thought about it in new ways and it really got me to thinking about other things. I think you just learn to open your eyes and see what is going on and not always ..."

"As an anthro major, I'm happy that I developed field work skills and produced research that I am proud of. Before I left, I was afraid to work too outside of my comfort zone, but going abroad made me realize my "comfort zone" is really much more flexible than I thought. Also, Madagascar developed as a serious area of academi..."

"I learned the power of cultural differences. Many of my actions and mannerisms were interpreted as very stand offish or off putting. I think that being a person who keeps to myself and also being a minority, I was somewhat of an anomaly in France. Progressive as it was, France hadn't evolved quite enough for me to feel completel..."

"I learned another language and the ability to interact with another culture. I met new people and learned how to be independent and provide for myself on an emotional level. It was worthwhile because it was a surge of growth and access to knowledge. "

"I'm glad I went, as I saw a lot of beautiful places and met a lot of great people. My classes at the university were really interesting, and I learned a lot about Irish history and culture. If you want to study in Ireland, I think Galway is the best place to be. However, if I did it again, I probably would consider choosing a co..."

"I think that if you go into the situation with no expectations, and are ready to embrace whatever is about to come your way, then your experience will be incredible. Those who left the program disappointed were those who came in with high or unrealistic expectations. I learned so much both inside and outside the classroom, but t..."

"I am not really sure. I paid the same amount of money as I do when I am at Barnard, but I really didn't feel like I got the education or the resources Barnard provides."

"Study abroad is great, just know that you can't choose the people on your program and that they really help to shape your experience! "

"I gained a high proficiency in French, which made it pretty worthwhile. I had studied abroad before, so my experience was not as life-changing as it was for others (happily, I experienced that the first time I was abroad!). I sometimes wish I had only gone for a semester rather than a year; there were some important courses I co..."

"I feel like I grew a lot. I learned a lot about who I am and what I value. I realized how independent I am and how much I value my alone time. These were important realizations. I had one class that I loved and which exposed me to politics in Australia as well as in Asia which was incredibly helpful. By taking me out of the tris..."
