Austin College
University Information
Austin College's Center for Global Learning facilitates Semester Abroad Studies and JanTerms. If a student would like to spend a semester abroad with Austin College, the he/she should stop by our office (Wright Campus Center #204) to begin the process. It is extremely important to go through the process in the office, otherwise the College will be unable to send the student's financial aid to the program and the student will need to withdraw from Austin College during their semester or year abroad. The Center's goal is to make each student's experience abroad a meaningful and engaging experience. In order for that to happen, students are required to go through the process in place at the Center.
We look forward to working with you and please read about other student's reviews and experiences at the different programs and locations that can be found at Abroad101.
Important Dates and Deadlines
As of right now, there are no firm deadlines in place for you to complete the Abroad101 Survey. However, before we can post your transcript from your sojourn abroad, you must complete the Abroad101 Survey and interview with the director (Truett Cates).
Thank you very much for your help and cooperation with this. We look forward to hearing about your time and experiences abroad!

"Although I cannot properly articulate all the lessons I've learned from studying abroad,I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to study abroad. There are many things you learn about yourself, your relation to other people, and your small role in the world when you study abroad-- and it makes all the difference."
Diana D Austin College
"Yes, i gained a much greater understanding of the region and what i want to do in my studies"

"My study abroad experience in Costa Rica was amazing. I learned a lot about the culture here in Costa Rica and Latin America, and learned a lot about communication with foreigners. After this experience I have decided I would like to go abroad again to possibly teach english, study spanish, or attend grad school. The main negati..."

"I wouldn't change this experience for anything. "

"My study abroad experience was completely worthwhile, but I would definitely do a different program or make sure that I was much better prepared the next time around. I was part of the reason that my experience was so frustrating and better preparation would have helped me immensely. But I still say, do it and own your experienc..."

"Studying abroad was definitely fun, but I wouldn't really coin it as a life changing experience. Honestly it really just felt like a glorified vacation. It was a blast, don't get me wrong, but the University was easy, and I didn't really face too many great challenges that I had to overcome."
William N Austin College
"The experience strengthened my interest in my professional plans. "
Rija S Austin College
"yes it was. I learned alot, but to me personally, I would have wanted morem of a culture shock. The Swiss culture wasn't much different from American Culture. In that respect I would have wanted a different location, but apart from that, I had a good time. "

"So much about myself, other cultures and the area. Very worthwhile"

"I don't think that I've changed and those closest to me have noted the same thing. My study abroad experience turned out to be more introspective than anything else for me. The program was tough but that was not the only thing I remember about living in France. One of the things that I'm most proud of is not having lived in Pari..."

"It was most definitely worthwhile. Through my internship provided by my program I was able to first-hand experience teaching English in a foreign country which directly impacted my future plans for teaching abroad. "
Soha N Austin College
"I gained many leadership skills by participating in the program. I look at the world in a different perspective then when i did before leaving. There many problems in developing countries world wide, that many Americans are oblivion to. By participating in a non-American culture, it opens up your eyes to the cultures all around ..."

"The research that I was able to do made up for any other shortcomings in the program. This study abraod program can be great if you put the time into it. "

"I went through a wide range of emotions when I was abroad, at some points even wondering why I was doing it, because I missed home so much. Finally, towards the end, it became clear why I did it. Of course I learned about French culture during my stay there, but I also learned a lot about my American culture while I was there. M..."

"I would not hesitate to say that this experience changed my life in terms of perspective as well as the tools I have learned to live a more fulfilling life in the future."

"I definitely think my study abroad program was worth while. It showed me many parts of China that most foreigners do not get to see, but beyond that, showed the many disparities in wealth and culture that can exist even in a small portion of the country."
Kalyn R Austin College
"I gained technical knowledge (snorkeling, scuba diving with data collection purpose), hands on knowledge about marine ecology (fish identification, ecological understanding of the marine environment) and awareness of some of the political/social complications involved in managing marine resources. It has added insight into my fu..."

"I was able to experience both sides of an extremely divided community and to, therefore, better my understanding of global issues. Additionally, I was also able to realize the value of the open-minded education I had received in America. It was definitely worthwhile. "
Caitlin C Austin College
"I lived abroad when I was younger, so I don't feel that my cultural awareness was heightened. I do feel like I learned a lot about myself, and there were a lot of days where it was really difficult. I caught the travel bug from this experience- it really expanded my curiosity about other ways of life."
Alexandra M Austin College
"There are a lot of little things about New Zealand that I'll remember from my study abroad experience, like tea with my host family, exploring Christchurch, getting to know everyone else from my program, etc. Study abroad is also a fantastic opportunity personal growth; your family is literally on the other side of the planet! ..."

"It was very worthwhile. I loved that it gave me a new view of the world, and that I got to meet so many new people and gain so much personal insight while I was away. I would do it again in a heartbeat, and I was really happy with all of my experiences there."
Andrew K Austin College
"The improval of my spanish and being self sufficient were my two biggest gains from this program. Personally, I think studying abroad anywhere will give you this experience if the country does not speak your native language. My only caution would be to students going to Spain: the grading system is much harder here in some insta..."

"I learned to look at other cultures from another perspective, and to not so easily judge. I also learned first-hand the hard balance between people and the environment, especially in third-world countries. It was definitely worthwhile. "
