Morocco: Cultural and Language Immersion Central Past Review

By (French and English, Austin College) for

IES Abroad: Rabat - Study in Rabat

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was most definitely worthwhile. Through my internship provided by my program I was able to first-hand experience teaching English in a foreign country which directly impacted my future plans for teaching abroad.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was quite an easy workload as was the material. It wasn't too challenging but overall the grading system was fair. Teaching methods were definitely different but in many ways more positive abroad.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everyone that worked in the office was an amazing asset to have, although a new job position (an intern) I felt didn't have much to provide us with in terms of helping us around in the country, etc. Rather she seemed to be annoyed with it all.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

any snack place on the street is delicious. eat the street food or you'll be missing out! but beware if you have a sensitive stomach...ease into it.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

When we went to the desert for a weekend, it was phenomenal! Sleeping on a dune hill, looking up at the stars, riding camels, seeing the sunrise over the expanse of desert. AMAZING.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

It is a safe city, for the most part. Obviously don't walk around late by yourself. Just don't be stupid in a foreign country.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? dont buy everything you want all at the beginning, you'll find cooler things and probably learn from other people's purchasing mistakes

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? none- it is my home language
Language acquisition improvement?

Everyone in the country! As well as other students in my program and directors. Barely anyone spoke English so it was largely implemented everyday.
