It was mostly about staying in a different culture and improving language skill rather than learning something serious in an academic area. - Middlebury College View Entire Review

I learned a lot of French and history from my classes, but I also learned a lot of important life skills from being forced to adjust to a new culture, environment, and language. - Amherst College View Entire Review
I gained an understanding of France's culture through the perspective of their radically different education system and I felt confident enough in my French abilities that I was able to spend the summer teaching French in a refugee center. - University of Michigan - Ann Arbor View Entire Review
Much travel experience, learning about myself (self-reflection), language skills - Williams College View Entire Review
Fluency in the language and a real-life experience of living the French lifestyle. It was absolutely worthwhile. I wish it had lasted longer! - University of Michigan - Ann Arbor View Entire Review
It was worthwhile. I learned that I don't take to cultural change as well, and that even if you're trying to immerse yourself, it's important to recognize that you're only there for 5 months, so you should feel comfortable holding on to certain customs. - Pomona College View Entire Review
A student studying abroad with Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Paris

Past Review Paris
I have a solid mastery of French. The experience of living in a big city such as Paris for the first time makes you have to adjust. There was so much to gain from the cultural offerings available in the city. Yes, it was worthwhile. - Middlebury College View Entire Review
I gained a lot of experience outside of my comfort zone. The encouragement to use a foreign language everywhere I went raised my speaking confidence. - Williams College View Entire Review

Language skills, cultural experience, new perspective - Middlebury College View Entire Review
Yes, it was so worthwhile. I can't wait to go back. Paris taught me to love learning, fiercely discuss and debate ideas, and take life a little less seriously. - Middlebury College View Entire Review
I definitely gained a lot of independence and self-confidence after learning how to navigate a foreign country in a foreign language alone. - University of Michigan - Ann Arbor View Entire Review
Past Review Fabulous
While I didn't often feel culture shock, I learned how many of the daily things I take for granted are unique to my culture/community in the US. While life in Paris wasn't insanely different, all of the little difference add up fast. - Middlebury College View Entire Review
I learned so much about French culture, language, and academics. I explored Paris all the time with friends from the program and felt like a true resident by the end of my stay there. Studying abroad really broadened my horizons and opened me up to new experiences!! - Pomona College View Entire Review
Other than improving my French, I am more well-versed in French culture. I also had the opportunity to travel to several other cities because traveling within Europe is very cheap and accessible. - Middlebury College View Entire Review
I greatly improved my French. I met some incredible friends. I learned about French culture, student life and the NGO world in a way I never would have if I did not complete this exchange. I gained independence and more confidence. - Middlebury College View Entire Review

About

Designed for students at an advanced level of French, the Middlebury C.V. Starr School in France provides opportunities to experience French culture in Paris - the cosmopolitan capital at the heart of France. La "Ville Lumière", Paris is home to countless museums, cafés, and medieval streets that wind around contemporary architecture. A city à decouvrir, Paris is an invitation to experience all the world's cultures while maintaining a proud and distinctly French feeling.

Students enroll in up to two Middlebury courses at the School in France headquarters, the Centre Madeleine, and take the rest of their courses at one of the many host universities in the city. At all sites, whether in a university course alongside local students, or at the Centre Madeleine, courses are conducted solely in French.  Housing - with local families or in residences - is geared to provide students with an immersion in the language and culture outside of the classroom.

Le Centre Madeleine, the headquarters of the Middlebury School in France, is located in the 8th arrondissement, close to the Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysées.  Students enroll in courses across several disciplines at both the Centre Madeleine and in one of several partner institutions: the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3, the Université Paris Diderot- Paris 7, Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot (ENM for Music majors only), or the Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture (ESA) (for Architecture majors only).
