I am beyond grateful for the study abroad experience as it allowed me to dive deep into a culture I had only ever learned about in the classroom. I found meaningful ways to develop my Spanish skills and confidence to speak the language. Lastly, I stepped out of my comfort zone and was open to all the wonders of South America, ma... I can't even completely put into words what I gained. The people I met and the experiences I had were beyond amazing. I think it is so important to put yourself in a place outside of your norm at least once in your life. You learn so much about a different culture and how your own culture is viewed through others eyes. You gain ... lisa.roemhildt - University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse View Entire Review

I learned a lot about the diversity of Latin America; it simultaneously has an underlying collective culture, while still maintaining distinct differences between each country. Chile was not what I was expecting. I thought I was heading to a country with a very warm culture, similar to what I had experienced in Central America. ... I have gained an outlook into a culture and society that is so different from the US and from Europe. It was amazing to see this country that is in Latin America, but so incredibly advanced. I gained the ability to talk without fear, and to live away from my family. Domenic D - University of Hartford View Entire Review

About
Built upon dozens of steep hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Valparaíso boasts a labyrinth of streets and cobblestone alleyways, embodying a rich architectural and cultural legacy. Nicknamed “The Jewel of the Pacific”, Valparaíso was declared a UNESCO world heritage site based upon its improvised urban design and unique architecture. Founded in 1536, Valparaíso is not only one of Chile’s most important port cities, it is also its third largest city. Valparaíso remains a source of inspiration for artists of all types, including the well-known Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda. Students can visit Neruda’s seaside home in Valparaíso, as well as the Chilean Congress. Offering strikingly beautiful views from the top of its numerous hills, it is reminiscent of San Francisco. Valparaíso, or Valpo for short, is a city where students can amble away an afternoon exploring its steep and winding streets, peppered with colored houses and electric lines, and admire the sparkling Pacific Ocean below. It is also only a two-hour bus ride away from Chile’s capital city, Santiago.
