About
Mendoza, located in western Argentina, is one of the most beautiful cities in South America. Nestled in the foothills of the majestic Andes, the site chosen for filming of the movie “Seven Years in Tibet,“ this vibrant city is home to over 1 million inhabitants. Travel within Argentina from Mendoza is facilitated by multiple plane, train and bus routes, and Santiago, Chile, is only an hour and a half away by plane. It is an ideal location for those who want to have easy access to outdoor activities and sports. Mendoza was developed at the beginning of the twentieth century from an arid desert area. Its productivity is maintained through a series of interesting irrigation canals which run alongside the sidewalks (sometimes jokingly called “yanqui traps,” as tourists have been known to fall into them) invented during Inca times, which carry melted snow from the Andes throughout the region and into the city itself.

Social Sciences, Spanish Language, and Latin American Culture: Students electing to study abroad in Mendoza through API’s Society, Development and Spanish Language Program will have the option of completing Spanish language coursework in combination with elective courses in English related to Argentine culture and society, economics and politics. Courses are offered by the Universidad de Congreso. All coursework is designed for visiting international students, though elective courses will also be open to Argentine students at the Universidad de Congreso. Advanced-level Spanish speakers also have the option to complete coursework in Spanish alongside their Argentine peers. As the standard Argentine academic calendar begins earlier than the session for international students, taking courses with Argentines will require an additional fee and affect the program start date. This program currently includes an international excursion within the program fee!
