I gained a ton. I improved my Spanish, made new friends, fell in love with Madrid, and learned a lot about myself. It was completely worthwhile. A student - Tufts University View Entire Review
I gained a lot of independence and self-reliance as well as a lot of cultural and language knowledge. A student - Tufts University View Entire Review
An entirely new outlook on life, culture, and how to interact with different people. I also became much more comfortable in my language. A student - Tufts University View Entire Review
I want to go back to Spain A student - Tufts University View Entire Review
It was an incredibly worthwhile experience. I gained a greater sense of independence and ease in social interactions. I also, of course, improved my Spanish level immensely and gained a greater understanding of the Spanish culture. A student - Tufts University View Entire Review

Studying abroad gave me the tools I needed to become a confident, independent, and culturally-sensitive traveler, which has served me very well in the years since. It challenged me to adapt to a new education system and to step outside of my comfort zone in terms of classes, extracurricular activities, and relationships with stu... I now feel very American, even somewhat patriotic. I have attained a new respect for the following tenets of American culture, which did not exist in Alcalá: The customer is always right, you can drink as much coffee as you want (whenever you want), food-to-go, doing homework in a restaurant/café atmosphere, the ubiquity of inte... Yes. It opened up my mind to many more things than expected and instilled in me a newfound sense of independence. Diana B - Tufts University View Entire Review
Ultimately, it was worthwhile, because it was part of life. I think I learned most about what I'm NOT more than having a match with who I am. I would have definitely thrived more in a different environment and actually left the program for that reason. I know plenty of people who loved it, so this is definitely a personal opinio... I gained a lot of clarity about myself as a person, and improved greatly on my Spanish. I made a lot of great Tufts friends, and traveled all over Europe (and even a little bit of Africa!). Loretta A - Tufts University View Entire Review
DEFINITELY! I gained a better command of Spanish, a love of Spanish culture, and friends from Spain, America, France, Denmark, North Ireland, and Italy. As cliché as it sounds, I also learned a lot about myself through the way in which I responded to stressful situations or through the way I related to the different people and ... Definitely! I made new friends with great people at Tufts, I lived with a family who was so warm and open to learn about new cultures, and I got to live and be a 'citizen' of a country that I had only visited before. Sera - Tufts University View Entire Review
Abroad was absolutely amazing. It was definitely worthwhile! I saw the world from another culture's eyes, I saw another way to live my life, and those two things changed me in great ways! Veronica R - Tufts University View Entire Review

A sense of accomplishment, independence, and many, many life skills. It was incredibly worthwhile. A student - Tufts University View Entire Review
I learned a lot about the differences in education in Spain and America. I also felt like I improved my Spanish a lot, and got the chance to participate in numerous valuable cultural experiences. Definitely worthwhile! Patricia M - Tufts University View Entire Review
This changed my life. The people in Spain are incredible and the staff members of Tufts in Madrid are so friendly and open. I learned so much from the culture, the people, and the program. Bronwen R - Tufts University View Entire Review
While there were many aspects of this experience that I didn't love, it's definitely not an experience that I regret. I met people on my program who will be my friends for life. No matter where you live abroad, you will always learn something about yourself. Through going abroad I learned so much about myself, and about what I w... It was worth so much, and meant the world to me. It really has helped to change me life, especially my outlook on many things. Shreena B - Tufts University View Entire Review
I am currently teaching English in southern Spain for a year through a government program. I would never have considered this program without my study abroad program. They also assisted me in finding and applying for this program, three years after I first left Spain! Anna D - Tufts University View Entire Review
I got to understand and view the world from a different perspective. I think as Americans we are in general very fortunate and while I was abroad, I got to look at the differences in values that are important to Americans versus Spaniards. I learned a lot about myself, I went with certain goals in mind which I ended up fulfill... Renée C - Tufts University View Entire Review
Yes, it opened my eyes to see different cultures and their lifestyles and how that has shaped their way of thinking. The world is full of so much diversity and it is a beautiful thing to experience how other people live in the world. Krizia M - Tufts University View Entire Review
Very worthwhile. I got to perfect my Spanish (which I have, unfortunately, since lost). I traveled all around Western Europe and got to live in a foreign country. Incredible experience. Amir M - Tufts University View Entire Review
My only regret about my semester abroad is that it's over. If I had realized how amazing my study abroad experience was going to be, I would've instead opted for either the spring semester (longer than fall) or the full-year. Gabrielle G - Tufts University View Entire Review
The program was great, like I said before, deep cultural immersion with support from a helpful administration. My language skills improved significantly, to say the least. Stanley A - Tufts University View Entire Review

The Tufts-in-Madrid/Alcalá program, which includes living options in Madrid and Alcalá de Henares, is designed as a semester- or year-long program of academic study. The program is run jointly with Skidmore-in-Spain although Tufts represents 70% of participating students.
Situated in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid is one of the world’s most vibrant capital cities, offering international students a wealth of historical, architectural, and artistic treasures and the lifestyle of a modern, multicultural, and dynamic society. Alcalá de Henares is a beautiful medium-sized city about 22 miles northeast of Madrid. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1989, Alcalá is known for its exquisite historic renaissance buildings, a slower pace of life, and the warm and welcoming nature of its inhabitants. Students have the option of living in Madrid or in Alcalá. You do not need to make your location choice at the time of application, but when you consult with the resident director during on-campus interviews in the fall or spring. You may prefer Alcalá if you enjoy the occasional excitement of a big urban center but are looking for a smaller, more inclusive city and a more intimate group of peers. Regardless of where you choose to live, you will have access to all program resources in both locations. Ample public transportation connects Madrid and Alcalá and travel time between the two cities is approximately 40 minutes.
