This course offers three weeks of online study and three weeks abroad. The online course is open to all applicants. The in-person J-term is open to college undergraduates who have completed the online term or who provide proof of completion (or the equivalent) of at least one semester of language study. This intensive Indonesian language course is aimed at helping students quickly learn and master Indonesian language skills as a window into Indonesian culture. This course is divided into two parts: three weeks of online study in the summer 2020 and three weeks on site in Bali, Indonesia, in January 2021. Mid-term and final exams will be given at the end of each part. Emphasis is on speaking and comprehension skills, as well as reading and writing, through online and on-site classroom teaching and field instruction. Based on online and in-country evaluation, including oral proficiency testing, you are placed in beginning, intermediate, or advanced classes. The native language instructors are experienced in teaching Indonesian language to foreign students. Oral proficiency-based methods and a variety of interactive communication-based language teaching techniques form the core of this course. Students are required to participate in an Indonesian language pledge. The language program is distinguished by its excellent teacher-to-student ratio. In addition, you will be introduced to Indonesian students, homestay families, and friends when you are in Indonesia, so you can practice Bahasa Indonesia with native speakers and apply what you learn in the classroom to the informal conditions of everyday life. HIGHLIGHTS Small-group language study and individualized tutoring Excellent teachers who connect classroom to practical applications Students are required to participate in a Bahasa Indonesia language pledge (J-term) Practice language skills through cultural activities
