This course offers three weeks of online study and three weeks abroad. The online course is open to all applicants. The in-person J-term is open to college undergraduates who have completed the online term or who provide proof of completion (or the equivalent) of at least one semester of language study. This course will help you quickly develop and master your Chinese language skills with a three-week online course and a three-week in-country program in China. SIT will conduct placement tests to identify your language level at the start of the program. Both the online and January terms will be taught by native language instructors who have completed ACTFL OPI training and have more than 12 years of experience teaching Chinese language to foreign students. Instructors will use oral proficiency-based methods and interactive language teaching techniques to help you build your speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing skills. The in-country component will take place in Kunming, China, where you will further develop your language skills and learn about Chinese culture. While in-country you will participate in a language pledge to fully immerse yourself in the Chinese language. This component will include formal language instruction, as well as opportunities to practice conversing with native speakers through on-campus activities with Chinese students, everyday community interactions, and excursions. HIGHLIGHTS Small group language study and individualized tutoring Experienced Chinese language teachers who have received ACTFL training In-country language immersion with a required Chinese language pledge (J-term) Practice language skills through everyday interactions and cultural activities (J-term)
