About

API offers those who want to study abroad in Spain a variety of programs in seven different locations, spanning the country regionally, culturally, and linguistically. Most locations offer courses in Spanish in a variety of disciplines such as Hispanic and cultural studies, business, and communications, as well as honors courses and direct enrollment with Spanish students. Spanish courses are taught at all levels, from the beginning to the bilingual level. Internships (for credit and not for credit) are available in Bilbao, Granada, Madrid, Salamanca, and Seville. API also offers liberal arts and business programs that feature courses in English. Semester, quarter, summer, academic year, and intensive two-week, three-week, and month-long programs are available in most locations.

Programs in Bilbao Includes:


  • Spanish Language and Culture Studies: Classes in this program are designed for international students who want to study abroad in Bilbao to increase their Spanish language proficiency in an immersive setting. Students choose courses from the following disciplines: Spanish language, Hispanic and Basque culture, Spanish civilization, literature, and more.  A student’s Spanish level is determined by a placement exam administered upon arrival by the University of Deusto. Students can take up to 15 credits per semester and can add additional courses, internships, and practicums for an extra fee. Students have the opportunity to enroll in up to two classes per semester with Spanish students. These classes are taught in Spanish and English. Students at all levels can enroll in classes with Spaniards that are taught in English as long as students meet the course prerequisites. However, API students must place into level Spanish III or higher in order to be eligible to enroll in classes with Spaniards that are taught in Spanish.

  • Business, Humanities, and Social Sciences: This program is designed for business, marketing, and sociology majors and minors, as well as students with an interest in international relations, who want to complete courses in their major while studying abroad in Bilbao, Spain. Students choose five courses in such disciplines as Spanish language, business, international relations, or economics. Each student’s Spanish level is based on a placement exam administered upon arrival by the University of Deusto. Students can take up to 15 credits per semester and can add additional courses, internships, or praticum for an extra fee.

  • Engineering and Spanish Studies: This program is designed for S.T.E.M. majors and minors who want to complete courses in their major while studying abroad in Bilbao, Spain. Students choose their courses from a mix of S.T.E.M., international business, and Spanish language and culture offerings. Each student’s Spanish level is based on a placement exam administered upon arrival by the University of Deusto. Students can take up to 15 credits per semester and can add additional courses, internships, or a praticum for an extra fee. Students in this program also have the opportunity to participate in the Deusto Tandem Program to partner with local students to practice language skills and exchange cultural knowledge.

API is pleased to support students who are the first in their families to attend a college or university. The First Generation Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750 per session and is available for academic year, quarter/semester, and summer students.

The API STEM scholarship is offered for API participants who are studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The API STEM Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750 and is available for academic year, quarter/semester, and summer students.

It is not an easy task to juggle the demands of college athletics with academic responsibilities while pursuing other interests on campus. API supports both current and college-bound student-athletes participating on our programs. We welcome student-athletes across all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA to apply.

Guidelines/Requirements:
Only for student-athletes across all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA. Students applying must also have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and submit a letter of recommendation and two essays.

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Students participating in an API program who have been awarded a Gilman scholarship will be eligible to receive up to $1,000 in matching contributions from API for a study abroad program, or up to $500 in matching contributions from API for an intern abroad program. To receive this award, Gilman winners should indicate their scholarship details on their financial aid information after acceptance to an API study abroad program.

The API Diversity Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750 and is available for academic year, quarter/semester, or summer students. In order to qualify for this scholarship, students must be one or more of the following: a U.S. military veteran, a non-traditional student (30 years old or older), a student with a disability, a minority student, and/or a LGBTQ student.

The API regional scholarships (Asia/Middle East, Europe, Latin America) provide awards that range from $250 to $800 per session. All API students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is both need and merit-based. We will review your academic record, essays and financial need as stated in your own words. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer students.
