University Information
Barnard has a rich history and tradition of study abroad dating back to the 1930s. Today, students study abroad in more than 35 countries, from Australia to Tibet. This site details the opportunities available, online resources, and procedures to apply. Please review the information on the website before meeting with the Dean for Study Abroad.
One of the best ways to learn more about what study abroad can offer you academically and personally is from other Barnard students who have studied abroad or who are currently abroad. We invite you to link to reach out to Barnard students who have studied abroad to ask questions about their experience and research which program is right for you.

"It was beyond worthwhile. I love Barnard I love Columbia I love New York City but a semester away in a new country with new friends a different language and new experiences everyday was incredibly refreshing and important for my college experience. The perspective gained from living abroad is unique and cannot be taught or give..."

"Yes! My experience abroad was fantastic!! My IES friends and I all found ourselves wishing for another four months when the semester came to a close. I met amazing people, had great teachers, learned a lot a lot of Chinese. I would highly recommend the program to anyone interested in China or Chinese! The program is really well ..."

"Yes, it was worthwhile. I love the city itself, and I feel like I got just the right amount of culture shock. People were generally polite and I learned a lot about the system of education here."
Victoria L Barnard College
"I learned a lot more about what type of a place I want to live in and what is important to me. "
Carly S Barnard College
"Most definitely worthwhile. I think my reading and writing skills in French have definitely improved, and I've always wanted to tour Europe, which is incredibly easy to do from here."
Victoria J Barnard College
"This is honestly a very easy program to enjoy. I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied. The dollar is VERY strong here, so you can easily live like a king, or at least live comfortably if you're under an extremely tight budget. If you want to party, alcohol here is absurdly cheap. If you hate Budapest, you can leave for a bra..."

"The abroad experience is definitely worthwhile. It gives you a chance to put all you have learned in college thus far (both about yourself and academically) into effect in a different setting. It also gives you new perspective about your home country and college. And, if your lucky, it gives you an opportunity to travel and have..."

"YES. My study abroad experience had a huge impact. I could literally feel the difference in my eyes when I returned and looked around. "It changed the way I see" is a silly claim to make, but I certainly felt that my perspective was wisened. It wasn't easy, at times, but it taught me a lot and allowed me to understand what I n..."

"Yes, but because the people made it so. The program has a lot of potential and will hopefully improve upon its weaknesses, but know that you will ultimate create your own experience on IHP."
Marly F Barnard College
"I know I am an actor now and BADA made me realize I am the only one standing in my way. Being in London and BADA made me feel like I could take on the scary prospect of going out into the real world next year after college as an actor and theatre artist."
Kimberly S Barnard College
"Definitely. I feel more comfortable in my own skin than I ever have before."
Rosemary B Barnard College
"My experience abroad not only exposed me to the political, economic, and social environment of Spain but made me more aware about what is going on in my own country. My experience was definitely culturally relative; we were always comparing America with Spain/Europe, but that did not stop us from becoming accepted as honorary ma..."

Alejandra B Barnard College
"As I stated above, I had a very enriching experience. I learned way more than I expected, and I've found that I am a much more confident, independent person thanks to being in a different country, navigating a new environment, and traveling on my own. My five months in Paris confirmed a lot of things that are typically said abou..."

"Being evacuated from Egypt helped me to learn many things. I was able to put my planning skills to the test and learned that I'm extremely good at organizing myself on short notice. Meeting new people and seeing amazing things just speaks for the sheer power of coincidence and the impact one decision can have on so many lives."
