About

Explore the possibilities and limitations of multilateral institutional cooperation to address critical global challenges through online coursework and field study in South Africa and Ethiopia. Your program will begin with an online course that critically evaluates the concept of global governance and the role that international organizations (both global and regional) have played in helping countries confront shared challenges. You will trace the development of the international political system since 1945 with an emphasis of the rise of liberal internationalism at the end of the Cold War and the critiques that have been leveled at the liberal institutional vision for global order. You will also explore how nationalism has recently eroded international organizations and whether liberal institutionalism can and should adapt to new realities. Your two-week field program in South Africa, with an excursion to Ethiopia, will focus on the architecture of the African political landscape, constructed around the multi-lateral objectives of the African Union (AU). This class will provide you with experiential insights into the conflict resolution and peace building processes of the African Union. You will examine local approaches to conflict resolution by exploring of the role of local and regional civil society actors in peace formation and processes of dealing with conflict. Highlights Examine how nations have worked collectively through international organizations at the regional and global level. Explore the theories and debates surrounding the “liberal institutional” project. Study different types of shared governance models from a variety of regions around the world. Visit the African Union in Addis Ababa and learn about its internal structure and workings. Develop an understanding of the AU in the context of global power blocks, such as BRICS, the UN, and others.
