I learned more about Latin America and went on a more in-depth study abroad than I had in high school. I also improved my language skills a lot. While I had a great time in Chile, it was not the challenging experience that I had hoped for and to some extent expected. I ate a lot of good food, drank a lot of good beer, and made a lot of good friends, but if I were to do it again I would look for a program in Peru, Bolivia or Columbia. Created from an idea of agroup habitants from Valdivia, The Universidad Austral de Chile traces its origins back to 1955, when it celebrated its opening after a trial period and with the support of various contributions from local citizens. In addition to its headquarters in Valdivia,The Universidad Austral has 9 educational faculties and two campuses in the Los Rios region, plus a campus in Puerto Montt and another in Patagonia.
For study abroad students the Universidad Austral de Chile has exchange agreements with countries such as Canada, Mexico, Panama, Honduras, among many others. It also offers a special program for students from the United States, where participants can study Spanish and other courses related to Latin American culture for periods of one semester or a full year.
