SIT Study Abroad: Rwanda - Post-Genocide Restoration and Peacebuilding

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Gave me a new perspective on the learning process and the current political climate in the world and specifically sub-saharan Africa.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Small workload. A variety of local lecturers from non-profits, universities, government, etc. Also, many field sites to memorials, NGOs, organizations, etc. Relevant readings assigned by AD. Much more discussion- and field-based than American educational system.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Staff very accessible, caring, and kind. At times, not as organized as I'm used to with an American university. However, you always get to talk to a person and get something sorted out which is incredibly advantageous.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

We ate so much good food. Plenty of vegetarian options.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We mostly went to program-related events with SIT, but host families are a great resource.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Incredibly safe country/city.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

Practicing with host family is a great way to improve. However, most people in the city speak french or english. Only needed to learn basic Kinyarwanda to get around at the market/on the bus...and even then you could get by with out it, but locals appreciate your effort.
