Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Poitiers

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to cope with difficult situations and constant conflict, and I improved my French. It was not worthwhile

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

This program was way too difficult for a study abroad program. Throughout the whole program it was made very clear that no matter how hard we studied for our exams it was extremely possible that we could fail and we were taking the hardest classes available in our major that many French students fail. However, the Middlebury administration was completely unsympathetic.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

There was no on-site administration, and the director David Paoli is based out of Paris and was honestly very rude to me and caused me a lot of stress.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My experience with my host family was incredibly bad and so toxic that I had to shell out around a thousand euros to a therapist to find conflict resolution strategies. My host mother screamed at me, disciplined me, and did not feed me enough, yet would be upset if I bought too much food for myself, wasted any food (even if I paid for it, she would berate me if I wasted food), and berating me for leaving my room messy. She would also frequently go into my room when i was not there and move things around. She also left a very passive aggressive note forcing me to unload the dishwasher in the middle of my very stressful exams, when I would have been completely happy to do chores at any other time. I considered moving out many times but the only reason I stayed was my host dad was able to articulate that I needed more food.

* Food:

I had to have multiple mental breakdowns at the dinner table in front of my entire host family for them to understand that I needed more food and more protein than they were giving me, and with my host mother's attitude towards food waste I had to throw out any expired food in different Poitiers trash cans so she would not see me wasting any food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It is very hard to get the French students to be friends with you because their circles are very closed off, so you really have to force your way in.The international students are much friendlier and much more willing to make new friends.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have any experience with the French healthcare system

* Safety:

Besides fairly frequent cat-calling at night and a lot of people always trying to stop you outside the Carrefour/bio-coop to ask for money/something else, I felt very safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I would have gone to Barcelona and lived by myself. This program was so bad and caused me so much strife that it made me not want to even speak French, despite the fact that I have studied it for fourteen years

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I do not know
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? no

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

We were forced to speak french at all times

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 300 level
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? listen to french shows/ videos and practice speaking

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Evolution

Course Department: EBO
Instructor: Sophie Beltran-Bech/Nicholas Bech
Instruction Language: French
Comments: This course was fairly easy, with around 12 hours of lecture with slides available on Updago. There was also an initial ungraded exposé on a book by Richard Dawkins, an exposé/presentation about an evolution topic, an in-class exposé on an activity, and an exam. Beltran-Bech and Bech are the nicest and most chill teachers out of the EBO faculty, and working with other students and getting their notes was key for success in this class

Adaptations au Milieu

Course Department: EBI
Instructor: Isabele Marcade/Christine Braquart Varnier
Instruction Language: French
Comments: The exam was extremely difficult but I think it was also hard for the French students. This course consisted of an all day lab, exam, and some graded in-class assignments. The French students and your Middlebury tutor should have most of the slides that CBV and Marcade use. I would try to memorize as much information as possible throughout the semester, and use the "annales", or past exams, to study, as some of the information does stay the same year to year

Perception et Communication Animale

Course Department: EBI
Instructor: Pierre Greve, Christine Braquart-Varnier, Freddie Jean-Richard
Instruction Language: French
Comments: I would say this is the hardest EBI class. Pierre Greve is a bit scary but his slides are available on Updago so it makes it much easier to study, but he was rude to me in the TD. CBV seems very scary, cold calls the French students, and makes of students that eat and use their phones during class, but is actually very nice, funny, and understanding of being an American student and always tried to make sure I was following along. Again, the other French students/your tutor should have her slides and Freddie-Jean Richard's slides. Freddie Jean is very soft spoken and does not really make her slides available. However, almost all of the questions on the final exam were found in the past exams which other students/your tutor have, so memorizing all of those are crucial. The in class graded cell drawings were extremely difficult, but it is key to draw what the cell should look like and not what it looks like under the microscope, as it is much easier to draw neatly. Again, asking other french students for help is key
