Founded in 1959, the Middlebury School in Germany offers students a fully immersive academic and cultural experience at one of three distinct program sites. In Mainz, students study and live alongside German peers while enrolling directly in courses at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität. Guided by the Middlebury Language Pledge, participants strengthen their German through daily interaction both inside and outside the classroom, choosing from a broad range of disciplines across the university's comprehensive curriculum.
Located just 30 minutes from Frankfurt, Mainz is the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and a vibrant university city of approximately 280,000 residents. With more than 2,000 years of history, the city blends Roman, medieval, and modern influences, offering students an immersive introduction to Germany's cultural and historical heritage. Known as both a City of Science and one of the world's renowned wine capitals, Mainz combines a welcoming atmosphere with a thriving intellectual and cultural life.
