Overall Experience
A student studying abroad with Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Concepcion
I gained an immense amount of respect for migrants and the things that they go through when making a new life in a foreign country - and if I can even say that what I experienced counted as xenophobia, my experience isn't even a fraction of what some immigrants deal with, but I have gained the tiniest amount of insight into thos... - Middlebury College View Entire Review
It was very challenging in many ways, but I have really learned out to advocate for myself, even in a second language (In host family settings and in hospital settings). I came out pretty fluent in Spanish and comfortable and confident to communicate with any Spanish speaker, so it was absolutely worthwhile despite the struggles... - Wesleyan University View Entire Review
My Spanish greatly improved and I got better at conversing with people I didn't know. I also improved in advocating for myself and dealing with unexpected issues. I became more independent and braver. - Middlebury College View Entire Review
Going abroad was definitely worthwhile! My Spanish speaking and writing skills have immensely and the whole experience helped me become more independent because even though the Middlebury staff are always there to help, I still ended up figuring out most things on my own. - Wellesley College View Entire Review

About

Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, and stretching 4,300 km from the Peruvian border in the north to Cape Horn and the Strait of Magellan in the south, Chile encompasses every kind of environment from tropical to desert to sub Antarctic.  The long, impossibly thin line of Chile boasts a magnificent Pacific coastline, Andean peaks with over 50 active volcanoes, the inhospitable Atacama Desert, and Chilean Patagonia.  Since the end of military rule and the return of a stable democracy in 1990, Chile has proven an attractive site for university-level study. Chilean history covers all phases and models that students may have studied and wish to learn about first-hand. Students have the option of directly enrolling in nine different universities in six distinct locations.

A lovely campus in the center of the city of Concepción, Universidad de Concepción is a private university that boasts the most unified campus among Chilean universities.  Because it hosts few internationals, students enrolled here have the opportunity to take advantage of a full linguistic and cultural immersion experience.  The university specializes in Spanish literature, history, and biological, environmental, and marine sciences.
