So much was gained from inside the classroom as well as from beyond the classroom. learned the history of a country as well as the beauty of the culture. This is also the type of trip which teaches you more history than any history class you have ever taken. Going to Hiroshima was life changing being able to see with your own ey... So much experience in the classroom. Emily - Michigan State University View Entire Review
In this month-long program, I gained valuable experience and first-hand observations that taught me ten times more than all my other courses did back at Michigan State. Especially with TESOL, there's nothing more valuable than experience and the program staff knows this well. Easily the most worthwhile class I've ever taken in a... How to be in an English Language classroom and learning about local cultures. It was worth it every step of the way. As someone who is now on the JET program, the Teaching English section is used often for me. Hayleigh Miller - Central Michigan University View Entire Review
I learned so much about teaching in Japan, and Japanese culture while abroad. It was incredibly worthwhile! I learned more about teaching than I have during my classes at MSU, and now feel more prepared to teach in Japan in the future. Cassandra W - Michigan State University View Entire Review
I learned to really appreciate students learning another language and how hard they have to work. Emma Ayers-Lewis - Michigan State University View Entire Review
I learned some strategies for teaching literacy and language. I used those strategies to teach in my other classes after I came back to MSU. This experience was extremely worthwhile. CiCi - Michigan State University View Entire Review
This was one of the best programs I've ever done. The teachers were all amazing and super kind. I took the TEJ program and it was wonderful because we actually went to schools in Japan to help teach English so we got to do some hands on application. My plan is to teach English in other countries so being able to actually learn a... Andrea King - Michigan State University View Entire Review

About
Think study abroad isn't in your major? Think again!

While you are at JCMU, you will discover the historic city of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, right in the heart of Honshu (the main island of Japan). Built as a castle town during the early 1600s, Hikone retains much of its original charm. Spend your time visiting sites such as Hikone Castle, one of only twelve Japanese castles to remain in its original construction. After a day of sightseeing, head back to our campus directly on the shores of Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan and the third oldest lake in the entire world.
Program offerings change on an annual basis depending on which faculty we work with, so keep an eye out for what we offer next year if none of this year's programs interest you.
Visit the JCMU program overview page for a current list of Career/Culture Hybrid Programs (also referred to as Non-Language Programs). Teaching English in Japan (TEJ) is offered every year, typically with 1 or 2 other course options.
