Overall Experience
So much experience in the classroom. - Michigan State University View Entire Review
In this month-long program, I gained valuable experience and first-hand observations that taught me ten times more than all my other courses did back at Michigan State. Especially with TESOL, there's nothing more valuable than experience and the program staff knows this well. Easily the most worthwhile class I've ever taken in a... - Michigan State University View Entire Review

How to be in an English Language classroom and learning about local cultures. It was worth it every step of the way. As someone who is now on the JET program, the Teaching English section is used often for me. - Central Michigan University View Entire Review
I learned so much about teaching in Japan, and Japanese culture while abroad. It was incredibly worthwhile! I learned more about teaching than I have during my classes at MSU, and now feel more prepared to teach in Japan in the future. - Michigan State University View Entire Review
I learned some strategies for teaching literacy and language. I used those strategies to teach in my other classes after I came back to MSU. This experience was extremely worthwhile. - Michigan State University View Entire Review
This was one of the best programs I've ever done. The teachers were all amazing and super kind. I took the TEJ program and it was wonderful because we actually went to schools in Japan to help teach English so we got to do some hands on application. My plan is to teach English in other countries so being able to actually learn a... - Michigan State University View Entire Review
Teaching is a technique that I can learn and that I enjoy, and I can help people all over the world. I think that's something good to know. - Eastern Michigan University View Entire Review

About

Think study abroad isn't in your major? Think again!

Spend 4 weeks over the summer in Japan on one of our 2 career-oriented programs (listed below). These courses are taught entirely in English, and students of all majors are welcome.

While you are at JCMU, you will discover the historic city of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, right in the heart of Honshu (the main island of Japan). Built as a castle town during the early 1600s, Hikone retains much of its original charm. Spend your time visiting sites such as Hikone Castle, one of only twelve Japanese castles to remain in its original construction. After a day of sightseeing, head back to our campus directly on the shores of Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan and the third oldest lake in the entire world.

The two career/culture hybrid courses offered over the summer are as follows:

Teaching English in Japan (6 credits)

Learn the needs and characteristics of ESL students in Japan while exploring the country's culture!

Explore about the unique cultural differences between how English is taught in Japan, and compare it with English language classrooms in the United States. You will get a chance to observe all levels of English classrooms, from elementary to post-high school. Are you an upper-level TESOL student? Then consider taking the practicum option while you are on the program! New friends, immersing yourself in a new culture, and a chance to prepare for a life teaching English internationally – what are you waiting for?

Health & Culture of Japan
 (6 credits)

Explore Japan's unique approaches to health, healthcare, and public health!

Not only will you be introduced to Japanese health issues facing the nation today, but you will also be given a chance to travel around the country to hear from leaders in the field. For example, past students have gone to Hiroshima, where an atomic bomb survivor recalled the harrowing aftermath of the devastation that occurred. Past students also visited the World Health Organization Kobe Centre, where experts discussed the current health issues they are combating in Japan.
