About

The Humboldt-Institut e. V. is a non-profit association established in 1977 for teaching German as a foreign language.  In the four -plus decades of its existence, over 85,000 students from 160 countries have taken part in the institute’s intensive German courses. Ever since it was first founded, the Humboldt-Institut has grown steadily.  Its success is based on helping support each student individually:

  • An extensive placement test on the first day of the course determines the students' knowledge of German in detail, allowing them to be placed at the best possible level.

  • In placing the students, the Humboldt- Institut does not make convenient compromises; instead, it tries to close gaps in the students' language skills, because the small linguistic nuances are what make the difference in achieving perfection.

  • Weekly progress monitoring supports the learning process.

  • No other school is faster and more efficient in preparing students for internationally recognized language certification such as the “TestDaF“ exam.

  • At the Humboldt-Institut a total beginner with no previous German skills can successfully complete the TestDaF exam in as little as 7.5 months.

  • Courses at the Humboldt-Institut are taught in small groups averaging 10 participants by highly motivated teachers with outstanding qualifications. Courses generally cover 30 lessons per week (with one lesson equaling 45 minutes).

  • Most of the schools of the Humboldt-Institut are residential schools, which enhances not only the learning process, but also the enjoyment of the common experience.

  • All prices are transparent, as course fees include tuition, teaching material, accommodation, full board, leisure time activities and excursions for most of the course centers of the Humboldt-Institut.

The city
Constance is a lively university town of 82,000 people and is located on the banks of Lake Constance (Bodensee). Its wonderful location on the lake and the proximity to the Alps and neighboring Switzerland make Constance a course location that offers a wide range of recreational opportunities. Constance can be reached quickly and easily from Zurich Airport.

The school
Our course center in Constance is located in a modern, nicely furnished building, which offers all the conveniences of a guest house. All the classrooms are bright and large with up-to-date, high-quality equipment. The German courses in Constance have a familiar atmosphere. This is largely to the school’s convenient size and location, a mere 15-minute walk from Lake Constance and the University of Constance. The city center is also only a few minutes away by bus. Our language school in Constance offers both short and long-term German immersion programs. The institute is open all year round and intensive German courses are available for all language levels from A1 to C2.

Accommodation
Students live in the same building in which the classes take place. Living on-campus offers many advantages: a short walk to class, ideal learning conditions and a family atmosphere. Students stay in single or twin rooms, all equipped with an en-suite bathroom. All rooms were renovated in 2022 and are modern and comfortably furnished. Each room has a TV and WiFi access. All rooms are also suitable for allergy sufferers.

Full board
We serve three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in the school’s dining room. Our kitchen staff offers a varied and healthy diet and cooks all meals fresh every day. A fruit basket is available throughout the day.

Leisure and cultural porgram
Constance offers a variety of cultural events, shopping opportunities and sports facilities. We take our students at the beginning of their course on a guided city walk to learn about the different options available to them.  Our staff organizes and accompanies the daily leisure activities. German is always spoken during activities and excursions. This enables our students to use the language practically, which makes a decisive contribution to their learning success.

Every Saturday, we offer full-day excursions to cities and places of interest that are included in the course fee (except for entrance fees).
