Franciscan University of Steubenville: Gaming - Austrian Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much its not possible to explain my experience on here. I recommend going if at all possible for i wouldn't trade that experience for anything in the world.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes in my opinion were very balanced. They were still quite challenging but in an environment that was conducive to allow us to study during the week and travel over the weekends.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everyone at the Kartause were nice and very kind. They helped us to learn the culture and were always happy to help.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing situations were good. I had no problems with my room other then the planks of wood popped out from underneath me a few times. The rooms were nice and helped me to feel at home rather then in a hotel.

* Food:

The food was decent. I liked that we got to try a couple of new things but overall the food was not that great in quality. I understand food is going to taste different in different countries but a lot of the food just did not taste very good and i do not consider myself to be a picky eater in the slightest.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The kartause is perfectly placed in the City of gaming. I felt as if i was actually apart of the town while still having my own place. I felt like i was able to learn and study the culture far better then if i was more displaced.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I personally didnt have any problems with health issued but from what i saw and from what happened with friends i would say they do a very good job of helping students with anything that might happen.

* Safety:

I felt perfectly safe in the Kartause and anywhere i might have been in Gaming, it is a nice little town and it great for this program.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I personally had a higher budget then most students going abroad but even if i didnt i would say it would be fairly easy for someone to visit many countries on a smaller budget.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 400+/per week on avg
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would reccomend planning ahead, it makes everything cheaper and buy most of your knick knacks in poland and rome.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

The school encouraged us to learn some German to at least interact with the people within gaming.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Grm 101
