The Perth Less Traveled Past Review

By (International business & Management, University of Maine at Orono) for

Edith Cowan University: Perth - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much about myself and I have so much more confidence now. Being independent is not a problem and I'm changed for the better. You definitely ned to have an open and aware mind when traveling. I know I can go any where now and be okay.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

There are really only three grades per class and the final exam is worth anywhere from 40-60% or your overall grade. Classes are lecture based and each class meets once a week with a tutorial section of the class used to study and discuss lecture material. Workload was difficult because there was so little of it over the semester and so you really have to reinforce what you learn along the way and be prepared for the work when it's due. (That said, the deadlines are very lax depending on the professor.) You call professors by their first name, which takes getting used to because in the States using titles is a sign of respect.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

No complaints really. I was expecting being on my own at first, but after making friends in the village it was fine.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Village housing was on campus and with 5 other students in the unit. Depending on your roommates, your apartment was either clean or dirty. Cookware was scarce although supposedly included in the unit. I did need to buy a sheet set from the university for 125 AUD. My roommates were kind enough to lend me items if I needed them. Housing was convenient to train station and a short walk when the buses weren't running.

* Food:

Lots of choices to eat out, familiar and not. But groceries are expensive, so when I wasn't eating out, my food intake was minimal to save money.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There were many programs available through ECU, but I preferred doing it on my own with a smaller group. You make better friends and save money. Rottnest Island (Rotto) is a must - rent bikes and explore the island. Try to go more than once! Fremantle (Freo) is also a lot of fun. And Perth is just an amazing city. For break, a bunch of friends and I rented a car and went on a road trip to Coral Bay. A lot of driving, but you get to see the road less taken in Oz.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt very safe in Perth - no risk of pick-pocketing or anything like that. Healthcare was great because it's free after paying for the coverage unless you abuse the insurance. I was sick for the first 2 months with colds and whatnot just adjusting to new germs. I recommend bringing as many over the counter drugs as you can from home because they are expensive and have different names and purposes.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent maybe 75AUD a week on food and maybe another 100AUD on everything else. It was very expensive. Going out even more so, because alcohol is very costly and drinking is part of the culture down there. My parents wired me money a couple times and towards the end it was tight.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I recommend opening up an account with a bank there. Makes it easier to replace a card if you loose it and you won't have to worry about conversions every charge. There's no great way to plan with exchange rate fluctuations, but keep an eye on it while you're there.

Marketing Principles and Practices

Course Department: MKT1600
Instructor: KY Lee
Instruction Language: English
Comments: KY is amazing! For an 8 o'clock class he makes it interesting and has amazing experience he incorporates. His textbook is to the point and simple. Easily my favorite class.

International Business

Course Department: INB2102
Instructor: Ian
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This class was another one of my favorites because the class was discussion lead. I loved the assignments (an in-class test, an interview/paper) and I was forced to keep up with current events which I enjoyed. The only problem is that I don't think it matches up with the equivalent course at home.

Course Department: ECF1120
Instructor: Kevin Vanderplank

Comments: Definitely my most challenging class. It had been awhile since I'd taken a math based class, so this was really working my knowledge banks. The professor was good though. I really had to teach myself because the tutor would turn everything around.

Aboriginal Communities

Course Department: ACS3133
Instructor: Keith Truscott
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The material was very interesting and different from anything we have here in the States. I learned a lot about communication and the importance of different cultures. Keith spoke from experience, but often changed his mind on what he was looking for in an assignment and was a tough grader. The textbook was amazing and really opened your eyes. I feel like the class was aimed more for students in a particular course and more difficult for those who are used to that method of teaching and discipline.
