Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The courses are, for the most part, challenging, at times incredibly difficult (language barriers aside). Demanding and high expectations, but a lot of support from professors, who are very understanding to international students.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They are awesome. Really care about the students and take us on very educational and highly enjoyable excursions. They try to encourage Spanish as much as possible, were great during the earthquake, can be a bit disorganized at times but alwaysget things done. They have really helped me to love Chile, and exceeded my expectations.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I live in the center of Santiago- great, easy location when it comes to transportation and such. I live with Olga, my host mom, who is such a sweetheart and I adore her. However, she does all the cooking and laundry and such and I sometimes just want to do things for myself. There can be a lot of commuting to class. It's a really cute place though, and my room is bigger here than it is in the US.

* Food:

So good. I eat too much. It's not that difficult as I thought it would be for vegetarians/ people with low meat diets. The fish here is superb. But they do put mayo on everything and eat bread all the time.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It's hard to make Chilean friends, but once you do they're great people. The program set us up with cultural ambassadors, to help us ease into Chile's social life. They are awesome people and great resources. I do end up speaking a lot of English with people from my program, though we try and speak Spanish when we can. We had some awesome trips to Valpo and the south and this weekend we go to the desert up north. The dancing here is fabulous! Nothing like it back in the States.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The university was very quick to treat me the Sunday I was sick. Even during the earthquake I felt really safe b/c I knew I had a great support network.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced with my host mom, classmates, and Chilean friends. Definitely needed to use Spanish everyday, although many people did try to speak English to me at first (poorly).

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Always grab some toilet paper before going into the stalls, because you probably won't find it in there. Someone who is open minded, loves language and culture, loves to dance and loves night life, and doesn't mind if someone does all of their cooking and laundry for them.

Geografia Economica

Course Department: Geography: GEO2012
Instructor: Ricardo Rubio
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: Great professor. Funny, engaging, and very understanding to gringos! As one out of two non-Chileans in the class it can be tough, but it is definitely worth getting up early for. Lot's of reading, big research paper. Never quite sure what to expect but definitely a challenge. Also was very much afraid to participate in class.
Credit Transfer Issues: No.

Chilean Poetry: End of the Century

Course Department: Estetica: ESE4036
Instructor: Jaime Blume
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: Professor is very sweet and at times funny but in general it is very difficult to stay awake in class. It can get really boring and the professor often just lecutres and reads poems aloud seemingly to himself. Very little student interaction. Little homework. Can use notes during exams. So many gringos.
Credit Transfer Issues: No.

Mapuche: Language and Culture

Course Department: Arts- Universidad de Chile
Instructor: Jose Nancucheo C.
Instruction Language: Spanish and Mapundungun
Comments: Great Prof- super old and adorable and very knowledgeable. Interesting students- mostly music and anothropology. Prof doesn't have an email and will randomly cancel class once in a while. I'm the only gringa in the class, so it can be a little intimidating to participate at times. I love languages and culture so to me it's been very worthwhile.
Credit Transfer Issues: I hope not!
