What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The program was amazing. I have never experienced a completely different culture before and it truly was an educational experience. Fortunately I was able to develop real relationships with both CIEE students and local Ghanaians. In my opinion it was these relationships, rather than the classes, that really opened my eyes. There is no substitute for human interaction that cuts across cultural, racial, and social boundaries. This program really offered a genuine cultural immersion and it was truly life changing.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was a little heavier than I expected from a summer program, but I felt like it helped keep the 'study' component of 'study abroad' alive. I do however think that the most rewarding and educational experiences came out of the classroom. Talking to local Ghanaians through my homestay was by far the most informing experience.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Lived in east legon

* Food:

Ghanaian food is very spicy but very good. It takes a while to adjust to, though.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? One class required students to buy a drum which the program fees failed to mention

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Dont hold yourself back, because you really get out as much as you put in. I would encourage you to push your comfort zone and dont be afraid to talk to people on the tro tro or try new foods. Ghana is a very welcoming place and you can have the time of your life if you let yourself.
