So much that I can't put into words! I learned to put things into perspective, to take life less seriously/go with the flow, take time and connect with the people around me, and to enjoy a slower pace of life. My semester in Dakar was 100% worthwhile. - Wellesley College View Entire Review
It was definitely worthwhile. I learned how to get around on my own and communicate with people across languages and cultures. I gained a broader perspective of how to be critical of my own western society and how to navigate it. I learned about the kind of people I want to surround myself with. - Brandeis University View Entire Review

I learned about different values and ways of expression. I learned to be more curious and to be patient. I learned a lot about respect. I gained a family from CIEE. It was SO worthwhile. I would encourage anyone who is even considering going to Senegal to do CIEE!! - Brandeis University View Entire Review
Much improved language skills. I got to see development on the ground and how it is working (or not). Got hands-on experience doing health surveys. I got to intern at a functioning non-profit that is completely Senegalese staffed. Gained general problem solving skills and learned how to connect with people across cultures and la... - Tulane University View Entire Review
I learned that I can do anything. There is so much more outside of this bubble. - Middlebury College View Entire Review

Yes it was worthwhile! While it was great having a program guide me through the integration and teach me what I learned in class, the most valuable experiences I had were outside the classroom, spending time immersed in the culture of my host country. - Barnard College View Entire Review

Definitely learned a lot just about globalization and colonialism simply from being in Senegal and that is incredibly valuable. Gained new friends and another family, and definitely improved my language skills (Wolof was a lot easier than I thought, and my French oral skills definitely got better) - Wellesley College View Entire Review
A sense of my own position as a white women in a black and 95% muslim country. The importance of patience and allowing what's around us to impact us while not losing our cool. I lost my fear of being alone. An awareness of when not to lean into discomfort. A sense of what beauty can be found at the same time as poverty and a lac... - Middlebury College View Entire Review
I would say that my experience was worthwhile; there is nothing I can imagine trading it for. My perspective on myself and on people and on life has changed, in ways that I cannot voice and that I do not yet know the effect of. I just know that I am grateful, and Dakar will always have a special place in my heart. - Wellesley College View Entire Review
so worthwhile, and I learned so much about Senegalese culture and met a lot of inspiring people. I learned to appreciate elders and family more, I learned how to be more independent in a foreign city. I learned a new language and I learned how to bargain well. I learned to see the world with more wonder, and to appreciate the sm... - Brandeis University View Entire Review

About

Senegal’s strides toward improved human rights and standard of living make it an eye-opening place to dig into complex environmental, globalization, and development issues. Use your advanced French skills in a combination of language and content courses taught in French and Wolof at CIEE Dakar. The program combines traditional classroom sessions with hands-on urban and rural experiences, in which students live with Peace Corps and local volunteers for one week.

All courses are complemented with CIEE co-curricular activities and excursions beyond the city to enhance classroom learning and provide intercultural understanding.
