Central College Abroad: Study Abroad in Vienna, Austria

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained so much more than I can explain. I feel as though it has helped me step back and look at things in life at a different angle. Not only did I learn about Austrian cultural, but also many other cultures from people who I met here in Austria.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was well balanced. The Central professors understand that we had lots to do with our University courses and that it is hard to study in a foreign country. Grading system at the universities differ from America. They grade by numbers, so from 1 to 4 with 1 being the best. The educational system is a social educational system so obviously it is different in many ways but students can still get a great education and the professors are well picked. The classes did not meet as many times as I would have liked but they were long so it equaled out.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Vienna has festivals and open air concerts almost all year around. So many cultural activities, it was sometimes overwhelming!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Always have money saved for health issues or emergencies. Try not to eat out as much and learn to cook for yourself.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 200 or 300 level
Language acquisition improvement?

Students, Friends, Professors, during my classes, ect. Everyday I spoke German either at home, in classes or on the streets. I don't think that you need to know German to study here, since almost everyone speaks English. Nevertheless, it was great practice for my German and improved it more than I had thought it would.
