CEA CAPA Education Abroad: Granada, Spain

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I have so much more confidence in myself. I understand that people live their lives so differently than we do in America, but we have so many common goals and interests in the end. I was so eye-opening and rewarding.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The experience in general was incredible. I enjoyed being at the elementary school more than taking the class at the university. I wish I could have spent more time there instead of taking the class as well. The workload at the University of Granada was definitely a lot easier than in the U.S.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I absolutely loved everything about my program. The program size was perfect, not to big and the perfect size to get to know everyone. The site supervisors from CEA in Granada were awesome and so personable. I felt comfortable going to them for anything. The only thing I would have liked would be if they tried to include more activities throughout the week because I lived with 2 other girls from a different program that did a lot of activities during the week and seemed like a lot of fun. We had a lot more down time during the week.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I LOVED my host mom. She was so caring and provided absolutely everything for us. When I was sick she took me to the doctor and cared for me like my own mother would. The living arrangements were great too.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Going on field trips with the elementary school was the most exciting for me. I got to interact with all the students as well as experience a waterpark in the mountains of Granada. Going to the bullfight during Corpus Cristi in Granada was very gruesome, but definitely gave me a great taste of the Spanish culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt safe the whole time I was in Spain. I also did get very sick while I was there but my host mother took me to the doctor immediately where I was able to get medication. Then, because I had HTH worldwide insurance I received a refund for the money I had to spend on my medicine.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If you are looking for a way to see how people live life across the world, you need to do this program. You have to be prepared for a challenge and understand that it's not going to be easy, but it will change your outlook on life forever. Any student that knows Spanish and wants to be a teacher should experience this program. I would do it over again in a second.
