Broadreach: Program at Sea - Caribbean Underwater Discoveries Voyage

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My experience was incredibly worthwhile, and I learned how to become more responsible and take care of myself as well as learning so much about the underwater world!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The educational experience on my program was excellent. There was not to much academic rigor, where our summer was overcome with reading and tests, but just enough to understand what we needed to in order to be safe and happy for the trip. I learned so much without having to spend a lot of time studying!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was very satisfied with my living arrangements. Although sometimes it got a little tight with all of the girls, we worked it out and were able to live cleanly and happily together, without getting in each others hair too much! The boat was comfortable and super fun to live on.

* Food:

The food at Broadreach is all handmade and cooked by the students. This was a great challenge, and I was able to learn so much about how to cook more than just pasta! It always turned out very yummy, too.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Each island that we went to, we were able to explore the island and culture, and I found this to be so much fun!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

The healthcare was very easily accessible on my boat and my instructors and friends were always there to help. There wasn't any prevalent health issues in the country that I needed vaccines for, and everything was very smooth sailing.

* Safety:

The safety of my host city was excellent. I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe, and if I did, there are always fellow Broadreach friends that are there with you to make you feel more safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

This program was a great starting program, and hopefully I will be able to explore more in the future.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't spend all of your money on the first place that you goes, because there are so many islands to explore, and you don't want to run out right away.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
