Broadreach: Program at Sea - Caribbean Underwater Discoveries Voyage

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. I learned how to live with a limited amount of everything, this made me a more independent person and helped me to realize that life is about experiences, not things.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The educational experience was only part of the trip, yet what we learned was fascinating. Most of the work was for getting PADI Advanced Open Water certified.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We slept outside every night and it was so much fun. If it rained, we would pack into the cabin which was also fun.

* Food:

The food was amazing! I loved it and we got to all take turns cooking it.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Everyone on the islands were so friendly and it was very interesting to see new cultures.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had a really funny experience where my braces bracket popped out! But everyone on the boat tried to help and it was handled so well. One of my instructors spent thirty minutes and fixed it for me. It made for a great memory!

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved this trip so much. I was with a really great group of kids and my instructors were amazing. If I could chose a different program, I would keep with my choice, especially because I am now an Advanced Open Water Diver.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Since we made most of our own food on the boat, I spent my money on souvenirs.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent about $15 on food each week which was just buying ice cream and Nutella when we went on shore.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would say not to spend money on food because looking back, I would have rather bought more souvenirs.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
