I learned a lot of Arabic which is why you would come to this program. Everyone tremendously improves! A student - Trinity University View Entire Review
I not only learned so much about the language and culture, but about myself as well. By being forced to use my Arabic and learning to navigate Beirut on my own, I found a new confidence in myself. Beirut is truly a one-of-a-kind city - Christians (Maronite Catholic and Eastern Orthodox), Muslims (Sunni and Shi'a), Druze, etc. al... Arica Maurer - American University View Entire Review
Living and taking classes at AUB was my favorite summer in college. The professors were great, and program fantastic--it really allowed us to learn Arabic while simultaneously exploring both Beirut and Lebanon. A student - Columbia University View Entire Review

Yes, absolutely. It's hard to describe all the skills you learn and this is such a better and more unique experience than most study abroad programs. Gwendolyn - University of Chicago View Entire Review

I sincerely learned a lot about myself. I made some very good friends, and even a current ex-girlfriend (long story). It wasn't one of those programs that coddles you and makes you draw about your feelings w... A student - University of Pennsylvania View Entire Review
Being abroad was so fulfilling, as a young undergrad and being placed somewhere completely foreign. It compels you to really find yourself. Siham - University of California - Berkeley View Entire Review
About
The Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (CAMES) at the American University in Beirut (AUB) is pleased to announce that it will be offering its intensive summer Arabic programs in Beirut between June 21 and August 9, 2017. CAMES offers two separate programs:
1) A seven-week program in Arabic language and culture that is designed for students interested in developing overall proficiency in Arabic in both its Standard and Lebanese varieties. Emphasis is placed on the development of the various skills within a communicative, proficiency-based framework, and special attention is given the development of intercultural competence in Arabic. The program provides instruction at different levels of proficiency from Elementary to Superior and students receive 9 credit hours that can be transferred to their home institution.
2) A seven-week program in Lebanese Arabic (LA) that offers intensive instruction in LA at the intermediate level. The program is designed for those students who want to devote their attention to the development of proficiency in LA and thus places heavy emphasis on the speaking and listening skills and on building intercultural competence in LA. The program has a prerequisite of one year of prior study of Arabic and offers students 6 credit hours.
In Summer 2017 the CAMES Arabic programs will be directed by Dr. Mahmoud Al-Batal, one of the coauthors of al-Kitaab Arabic textbook series and will feature an outstanding team of instructors from AUB and other educational institutions in Lebanon, Europe, the US, and the Arab world. In addition, the programs will provide students with opportunities to engage in cultural and community-service activities.
