Study Abroad in Lebanon

Lebanon is a country in western Asia located along the Mediterranean Sea and bordered by Syria and Israel. Due to it’s location, Lebanon can be characterized by a diverse history and rich culture. The capital city in Lebanon is Beirut, which received the number one travel destination in 2009 by the New York Times.

Few countries experienced the catastrophe that was 2020 more fully than Lebanon. Hopes that the October 2019 uprising would lead to political uplift were dashed against the hard rock of government gridlock. The currency cratered, impoverishing many, and a massive explosion at the Beirut port ripped through the capital. And through it all, the pandemic has pressed down on the country’s health and economic wellbeing like a heavy weight. That’s the big picture. It is a dire one. Yet it’s still possible to move about Lebanon and see signs of a normal life. The streets still throng with pedestrians (when the country isn’t on lockdown), men and women lounge at the cafés and stop for shawarmas.

The Mediterranean sea still shines in the distance. Lebanese have been living with different levels of uncertainty and crises for a long time. They’ve learned to cope and even to thrive in the chaos. The country is a case study in finding ad-hoc, entrepreneurial solutions to problems, many of which are on display for the incoming study abroad student. The result is a kind of vibrancy and dynamism absent from more stable environments. It is perhaps just such a vibrancy that’s attracted record numbers of study abroad students to the country. Despite a State Department travel warning - https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/lebanon-travel-advisory.html, the number of Americans studying in Lebanon, for instance at the American University of Beirut, increased by 400% between 2012 to 2019.

Below you will find our list of Study Abroad programs operating in Lebanon.
