Study the Francophone world from three countries in one semester, comparing global issues firsthand in Paris, Rabat, and Dakar. APA’s Multi-Country program combines comparative academics, French-language immersion, homestays, and cultural experiences across three distinct but interconnected societies.
Students enroll in four interdisciplinary courses for four credits each, all taught in French. Each course examines major global themes through the different historical, cultural, and linguistic perspectives of France, Morocco, and Senegal. Local professors teach each section of the course, bringing regional expertise and the surrounding city directly into the classroom through academic excursions, guest speakers, and experiential learning.
All students take the following introductory course:
- Introduction to France, Morocco and Senegal: Three Worlds, One Language
Students select their remaining three courses from the following offerings:
- International Migration: Trends, Policies, and Challenges
- Islam, Politics and Identity: France, the Maghreb & West Africa
- French Colonialism and Decolonization: France, Morocco, Senegal
- Passages Through Francophone Cities
- Comparative Approaches to Gender in a Post-Colonial Context
- Contemporary Urban Dynamics: Paris, Rabat, Dakar
Course offerings remain subject to program enrollment and term-specific scheduling.
Strengthen your French through full immersion and individualized language support throughout the semester. Students also receive introductory instruction in Darija, or Moroccan Arabic, while living in Rabat and Wolof while living in Dakar. APA’s local teams provide ongoing academic and personal support in each city, including location-specific orientations, regular advising, methodology sessions, and proofreading workshops.
Live with a carefully selected French-speaking host family in each location and experience everyday life firsthand. Each student receives a private bedroom, daily breakfast, and Wi-Fi. Host families provide five dinners per week in Paris and seven dinners per week in Rabat and Dakar.
Experience the culture of each host country through a comprehensive calendar of cultural events, day trips, and weekend excursions. Activities may include theater, museums, cooking workshops, traditional music, dance, concerts, visits to local markets, and neighborhood tours. The program also includes one day trip and one weekend excursion in each location, with recent destinations including Fontainebleau, Burgundy, and Marseille in France; Tangier, Fez, and Volubilis in Morocco; and Île de Gorée and the Sine-Saloum Delta in Senegal.
Air travel between the three host cities is included.
Available for study abroad, gap year, or leave of absence. The program is designed for students with at least three to four semesters of college-level French or the equivalent. Students who would like additional language preparation before a fall semester may add APA’s Paris August Short-Term program at a reduced combined-program rate. Students may also extend their experience into an academic year by combining the Multi-Country semester with a semester in Paris or Dakar.
