"A better understanding of the French language and culture, as well as the importance of having a host family rather than living on my own for the experience."

"It was definitely worthwhile! Coming back to the US, one of the big differences I've noticed in myself is a greater willingness to step outside my comfort zone, try new things, and be adventurous. I also have a completely different view of the world. It is so big, and there are so many people and places. The US may be a big coun..."

"It was definitely worth it to improve my spoken Spanish skills. Also, I really enjoyed getting to see the amazing country of Costa Rica. It is a country rich in nature and extremely beautiful. I also liked seeing how the local culture and customs were different from the U.S. There were lots of little customs that were different...."
Hanna H Truman State University
"Very worthwhile, but more support in logistical things would have been very helpful--health care, housing (where to live, how to pay, etc.), which classes to take, how to study properly, how to transfer credit, etc."
Sadie W Truman State University
"My experience has been very worthwhile. I learned a lot about myself and how I deal with uncomfortable situations. "
Kate C Truman State University
"I learned absolutely so much; I feel much more cultured, for one thing. I've learned that people all over the world, no matter their ethnicity, culture, or background, just want to be treated with respect and just want their voice to be heard. We all want to be someone, to be an individual, but we don't all get treated as such. ..."

"I learned that I am able to do things and overcome obstacles I used to be so anxious about. I made lasting friendships with people who were learning the same things about themselves and growing and exploring the country together. It was the most worthwhile four months of my life."
Laura D Truman State University
"I learned things about Ghana and West Africa that, in many ways, shattered the picture that Western media paint of the African continent. I learned things about myself - how I respond to uncomfortable and awkward situations, how I respond to being the only white person in a class of 40 students. I learned too many things to list..."

"I learned to be independent. I learned how to travel and make friends, and I became nearly-fluent in Spanish. I learned the importance of going with the flow and discovered a love for translation and eating Galician octopus. It was absolutely worthwhile."

"I learned how to be more self-reliant and independent, in both personal and practical ways. For example, Germans taught me how to drive a stick-shift, I learned to changed a bike tire, and to cook for myself. I will return to the US (for the time-being!) a much more well-rounded and happier person. "
A student Truman State University
"It was definitely worthwhile. First and foremost, I learned how to survive in a language which I didn't know. This developed my cultural sensitivity and communication skills. In addition, planning and leading trips all across Europe sharpened my leadership skills. I also developed more individuality and a sense of self, all very..."
Kory Ford Truman State University
"I learned so much about different cultures, and I felt such freedom and lack of judgement for who I wanted to be as a person because no one there knew me before. It was so worthwhile, and I would love to go again, to Finland or another country."
A student Truman State University
"Mostly I learned that I can adapt to new situations and figure things out by myself, even when I an around completely unfamiliar things. Honestly, this is a place where I might want to live, and so this experience definitely helped me realise that."
Brooke Evans Truman State University

"Where do I start? It think the primary thing is perspective. Most Americans have nothing other than a strictly American perspective: this is not the case with other countries. We're a country often perceived as ignorant, and unfortunately it's often true. Getting out of my paradigm and seeing life from the other side of the worl..."
