About
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI is the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture. Set in a stunning location on the Isle of Skye, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is the only college in the world to offer degree courses taught entirely through the medium of Scottish Gaelic. From Foundation Apprenticeship and Undergraduate to Master and PhD level, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig delivers a variety of courses on campus and through distance learning. Disciplines include Gaelic language, culture, literature, history, music, development, media and eduction. Students studying on-campus have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a living and working Gaelic community where the language and culture are central to the ethos and day-to-day life of staff and students alike. In addition to degree level courses, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig also offer five day short courses in Gaelic and traditional music during the Spring and Summer which are attended by people of all ages from all over the world.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is a modern, innovative institution and has excellent learning resources on-campus including an exceptional library collection, residential student accommodation, gym facilities, music/dance/drama rehearsal and performance spaces and broadcast/recording studios. The institution's activities are greatly enhanced by co-operative links within the wider Gaelic community and the campus is home to a number of creative and cultural projects such as Tobar an Dualchais, Faclair na Gàidhlig and the multimedia and design company Cànan. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI also plays a leading role in the promotion of the Gaelic arts and culture and hosts a programme of residencies for artists in music, literature and the visual arts.
