University of Texas - San Antonio: Maya Archaeology

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The experience was very worthwhile. I learned so much about archaeological research methods and the Maya in general. I learned a lot about Belize culture, and how to travel while enriching my experiences in new places by doing so.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The educational experience was very much focused on hands-on learning, which is necessary for archaeology. We learned about theory, methodology, and culture simply by participating in the field work. By being split into groups, some groups did things slightly different than others and gained more experience in one area or another than other groups, but all-in-all everyone learned a lot, worked hard, and had fun.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Food was delicious, we got to taste quite a few local dishes, but also had some american "comfort foods" every once and a while.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Working so closely with Belizean archaeologists really helped me learn spanish, Belize culture, and also make close friends.

* Health Care:

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
