About

This course will involve UNI students in site visits and activities that will enlighten them to many possibilities for new and expanded energy alternatives for Iowa and the nation. Making choices in the use of alternative energies concerns not only system infrastructure, but also societal and policy decisions that foster or hinder expanded use of alternative energy resources.

In Iceland, we will explore the many uses of geothermal energy (geothermal building heating, geothermal water heating, etc.). In Denmark, we will explore the expansive use of wing turbines, biomass/straw district heating, photovoltaic electricity generation, and societal/policy adoption of alternatives. The focal point of the program is an extended visit to the Energy Academy on Samso Island (carbon neutral island). The course will also include visits to historical sites and amusement venues that educate on the broader societal norms and values that have encouraged use of alternative energies.
