Archaeological Adventure, Fantastic, Eye-opening, Experience of a Lifetime! Past Review

By (Anthropology., Berea College) - abroad from 06/14/0014 to 07/15/2014 with

University of North Carolina - Greensboro: Tanzania - Paleoanthropological Field School at Olduvai Gorge

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a plethora of archaeological skills and lab-work, I can apply to my career. I learned the hardships of traveling in another culture. I experienced a world focused on completely different things and I got to think about how my culture responds to them. I am more capable now to provide support for my friends abroad and my international friends, from first hand experience. I gained friends I'll never forget, even if we loose touch. They change me, and my perspective. I gained the desire to see, learn, touch, experience the world. And to do so through people. It was the experience of a lifetime. A dream come true.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

For camping in a savanna, I had a blast and was pretty comfortable. Bring a good sweater!

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Well, the purpose of this is to learn better technical skills in one of the most fantastic archaeological sites in the world, so it wasn't really a priority. However I would have liked more interaction. Out of the whole month, I feel like we only got a handful of true interactive experiences APART FROM when we were working.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I injured my leg abroad. I was well taken care of, even saw the on site doctor, and a translator was provided for me. I am very satisfied.

* Safety:

They were almost a bit too cautious. I wish I had had some opportunities to have to fend for myself for a minute and experience the culture shock firsthand, without guidance.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Everything was provided. Even excursions. There was nothing to worry about.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $6 (I bought cokes)

  • People
  • The guidance - I never felt alone or lost
  • Course material
* What could be improved?
  • Mailing list with contact info of participants would be awesome!!
  • Ask participants to learn more Swahili before they travel!
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Prepare yourselves for the change when you return. You will see the world differently, and will put your life in the perspective you gained. And it might be a tough transition, but remember (hopefully), it was worth it.
