Universidad de Ciencias Empresariales y Sociales (UCES): Buenos Aires - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was the most worthwhile experience I have ever lived. I feel so much more aware of global events, and understand different cultures having met so many different international students, and have learned better study habits due to the difficulty of the classes.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Not many students from the United States have studied at UCES before for more than a semester so there were a lot of misunderstandings with obtaining a student Visa upon arrival, which was a misunderstanding met on both sides of the program. The classes are very hard because they are taken in another language, and they say it is better to study abroad as a Junior or Senior so the difficultly level was substantial because I was taking fourth year Business classes in another language. The difficulty level and difference in grading has been making it hard to transfer the classes eventually and fairly to not drop my GPA, and we were told that we would deal with signing up for classes when we arrived to the host country when we arrived, but nobody will respond to let us know if our classes are going to transfer. Other than problems with grades and classes transferring the International office has new people in charge that are helpful and are starting to organize things more. Now that we have worked out some problems it will be easier for the next student to go with more knowledge available. The school is very good and the classes are very hard but you learn a lot and my language skills have improved greatly. It was also nice to meet international students from all over the world with a program that have set up to make sure we have people available to help and get to know.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing information given was short and most of the links did not work, or had apartments that had already been taken. There are a lot of temporary apartments available that are fully stocked with furniture and cook-ware but they are more expensive to foreigners and it is a little harder to find a head of time, we had to stay in a hostel until we found a place to stay by walking around and visiting rental offices.

* Food:

It is a very big city, there are all types of super markets, restaurants and availabilities for dietary restrictions.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program had a few resources and events planned but we were able to easily find event planning companies that set up trips for international students, and it was the best way to travel. We always had an amazing time and all types of events and trips were available.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Since we stayed in a hostel we were downtown, and not aware of the saftiness of the area. It was not too safe to walk around at night with just girls, but it was manageable. We were looking for apartments alone so it was a lot easier to be scammed or robbed but we were lucky and none of the above happened. The people working in the office now are more helpful to students who ask for any help in good areas to be in or where to look. I can't comment on health care because i haven't had any experience in the area, but I know most of the hospitals are cheap and you pay up front until your insurance pays you back

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? To talk to the most people you can before going to give you advice about the program and make sure you are well prepared ahead of time. The student needs to be hard-working, and open-minded but also love to travel and meet new people. People are very friendly and generous for the most part.
