About

Each year, the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC) offers Spanish courses that are designed to meet the communicational needs of non-native speakers who wish to acquire the Spanish language, a necessary tool to effectively participate in a globalized world.  Prospective students may be coming to Chile for business, work or to study and understand the language.

The main objective of these Spanish courses is to develop oral and written comprehension and production skills. In addition, they offer the chance for students to get to know Chilean and Latin American culture through different cultural expressions. Teachers organize debates, workshops and oral presentations, as well as interactive events with the UCSC and the general community.

Semester Courses:These courses are suited for exchange students and those who will be residing in the country for prolonged periods of time, and contemplate 12 class hours per week, with a total of 192 hours. In addition, students are able to register for two additional courses according to their interests.Course Dates:

  • First semester at UCSC (March – July): Second week of March.

  • Second semester at UCSC (August – December): Second week of August.

Intensive Courses:These classes are only offered in January and July of each year, and require a minimum number of students in order to take place. There are 60 and 90 hour formats, with students taking classes for 6 hours every day (30 hours per week) for two or three weeks. Three levels of communicative competence can be provided (basic, intermediate and advanced). Two hours per day are dedicated to a computer workshop that allows students to exercises the four language skills autonomously as well as interacting with other speakers by using technological media, all under the supervision of a tutor.Special Courses:Tailor-made courses are available, depending on the specific needs of individuals or groups. For more information, contact cjurgensen@ucsc.cl

The application dates are the following:1) First Semester (March to July): November 15th 2) Second Semester (August to December): April 15th

Placement Test:Upon arriving at the UCSC, students will take a placement test in order to measure their Spanish language skills, which will allow the teaching staff to determine the students’ levels at the beginning of the course, guide their learning process and place them in an appropriate course.Certification:All courses offered by the UCSC grant students credit as well as a study certificate.Additional Services:

  • Timely and appropriate orientation on topics related to students’ stay in Chile.

  • Personalized attention when dealing with administrative errands.

  • Access to all of the UCSC’s installations, language laboratories and library.

  • Assistance in housing placements (We strongly recommend opting for a home-stay with a Chilean family, where students are guaranteed more language and cultural exchange).

  • Visits to tourist attractions in the Bíobio Region, organized by the Office of International Affairs.

*This course is free of charge for those students who come from universities with which the UCSC has academic exchange agreements. However, spaces are limited to the maximum number of students allowed in the course.
