The GREEN Program: Peru - Water Resource Management & Sustainable Practices

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a lot of energy to keep on making efforts to make Earth a better place with less climate and social issues. I also gained a lot of perspective from what is happening in other countries and from what different people think, their intelligent ideas. I basically just gained a lot of happiness from being with wonderfully nice people; making adventurous and fun things together but also working together, thinking and designing ways to make positive changes in the world.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The program was intensely enriching. We always took the most advantage of the time. The normal schedule was waking up at around 7 and then sleeping at around 11 so we had the right amount of sleep without wasting time. Every class, site visit or activity was important and was perfectly scheduled to fit other plans. We had classes about Peru, water issues and other global issues in the morning and then we visited a project or facility related to what we learned. For example, water treatment and hydropower plants. There was also time for fun and adventure such as hiking, water rafting, ziplining, karaoke, dancing, salsa lessons, soccer and much more.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The GREEN Program counselors from the US went several times to Cuzco, the main site of the program, to meet with the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola and a tourist company (our excellent hosts) to arrange a perfect schedule of activities.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The hotel in Cuzco was amazing. It was five-star hotel or very close to being one. It was well located, very clean and nice looking and people that worked there were very friendly. Breakfast was good.

* Food:

After the program I got to the conclusion that Peruvian food is the best. We always had several healthy food options, including a vegetarian one. We had excellent ceviche (Peru's most famous dish) a couple of times. The directors of the program made sure that we always had something to eat and never starving.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We had a lot of opportunities to see people, places and culture because we walked a lot around the city of Cuzco and other places. We had the chance to meet project and facility directors, teachers, and our super awesome and friendly tourist guide who made us company throughout all the program. These people always shared personal and historical or educational stories that opened up our minds. We went to restaurants where the national food was served and where there was live Peruvian music and dance performances, which were really cool.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

None of the participants had serious health issues. We were advised to bring steri pens or devices to sanitize water with us just in case Peruvian water was harsh to our stomach but everyone was fine with the sanitized water provided. We were also advised to bring our own mini first aid kit so it was useful when some of us got a headache, blisters or any other minor situation. Still, the program requires of us to fill a medical from so they are prepared for any health inconvenience. Everything is under control and figured out in the program.

* Safety:

Safety is definitely not an issue. However, you need to take some safety measures like in any other place in the world.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The program's cost is 4200 US dollars and it is everything-included. I know it is a big amount of money for just 10 days but it is probably the best investment of your life. You will learn tons every day not only about science stuff but about new people, thoughts, places, history, culture and more. I guarantee you would be extremely happy of being with people with the same passions and interests as you of making the world a better place and solving issues. The GREEN Program is energizing, fun and motivating. Back to finances, the 4200 US dollars include everything so I just took 200 US dollars, changed them to "soles" (Peruvian currency) in the airport and it was more than enough to buy some drinks, souvenirs or snacks.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • I love how we take advantage of time to just be enriched, be a better person.
  • I love how we have the opportunity to overcome fears and push ourselves mentally and physically.
  • I love how I become hopeful of diminishing climate change and other urgent issues because of the good energy I feel in my program friends.
* What could be improved?
  • I would have liked to learn more about sustainability practices because we mostly learned about water resource management.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I know that you just need to be relaxed and confident that everything is perfectly planned and the counselors know what they are telling you. So don't try to be ahead or try to know what are you going to do the next day or the day after, just enjoy the moment.
