The GREEN Program: Iceland - Sustainability and Renewable Energy Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This trip was completely worth while. Studying abroad will teach you more than you could ever learn in a classroom. Getting to see first-hand the implementation of what you learn in the classroom is a unique experience that undoubtedly enhances the learning process. Mix that with the awe-inspiring country that is Iceland and you have an adventure that every student should be taking advantage of.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes at the university shouldn't be too difficult to follow for anyone who has a decent understanding of renewable energy and environmental science. Some of the engineering portions may be difficult for people who don't have that kind of background. The lectures on the actual technologies, geothermal and hydro were much more lively than the energy economics classes.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Different than what most Americans may be used to but part of immersing yourself in another culture is the food, right?

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Having native Icelanders along on the trip with us played a huge role in learning the culture. Always there to answer any question you could come up with and more importantly help with being less tourist-y.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have any experience with the healthcare system. No vaccines were needed specifically for this program.

* Safety:

One of the safest countries in the world there was never a point in which I felt our safety was jeopardized.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Since food and housing were included in the cost of the program it was not difficult to live on a minimal budget. The only cost was personal expenses which can be easily limited.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
