What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was really worthwhile. I met a lot of amazing people from all over the world. Being in Europe I was able to travel to other nearby countries and experience their life and culture as well. I love the fact that I learned the Spaniards way of speaking Spanish. They use vosotros form and I learned that in south america they use vos. I am an international business and spanish major so it greatly benefited me that I will be able to use the correct forms when traveling.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I had wonderful professors who had an extensive knowledge on the subject they were teaching and they went out of their way to make sure they conveyed their message clearly.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program consisted of 23 students. I felt like this gave us the opportunity to get to know the professors and coordinator on a personal level. The coordinators were always accessible via office hours, email or cell phone.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I feel I was one of the luckiest students in the program. I got placed in a neighborhood where the school was a 12 to 15 minute walk to. My host mother was really kind and her daughter and grandson treated me like family. I was close to centro and the nightlife there but if you wanted to go to the river or nervion was a 40 minute walk. Or if the buses were still running you could take that or just hitch a taxi.

* Food:

I mostly ate at home. The food was good. Every once in a while you come by a plate that is not to your liking. Foods here are not spicy so be prepared for that if you are a spice lover.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The night life was amazing. The people here are out and about at all hours of the night. There is an abundance of bars, clubs, discotechas to go to. Arranged excursions included Cordoba, Granada, Madrid and Portugal. Our professor would take us on a guided tour and we got to learn a lot of history. But we would also have our own time to do our own things and explore the city on our own. We also had an excursion to a bull fight which was one of my favorite things here in Seville.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The petty crime rate is high in Sevilla so just be on your toes! Most incidents occur due to mindless mistakes so just be aware of your surroundings at all time. Cat calls are often made and men ae not discreet nor do they try to be discreet about staring at you. I got sick a couple weeks after arriving to Sevilla and it was no problem getting a doctors appointment and getting medicine. Also, one day I got an allergic reaction to some bug bites and I called up my coordinator and they spoke to my host mother about where the nearest hospital was and told us what to take as identification. Everything worked out fine and I felt a lot better afterward!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Take more than you think you will need. Make a budget and stick to it! When you go on excursions and trips hotel and transportation is paid for but lunch and dinner are not. It is best if you go to a grocery store and make sandwiches than going to a restaurant. A piece of advise, before going out, take only what you intend to spend. If not you will end up spending way more than you wanted to.

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

Being here allowed me to speak spanish to my host family and to the Sevillanos. Their spanish is different from the spanish I was accustomed to speaking and it allowed me to get a different perspective of the spanish speaking community. I feel that my spanish speaking abilities have grown and I hope that it will continue to do so.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? DO IT! It is an awesome experience, the coordinators are great and I learned a lot from the classes I took.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Spanish Literature

Course Department:
Instructor: Julian Perez
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: The professor went into great depth when explaining the material. Some of the stories were a bit hard for us at first but the professor would act out the stories and put forth emotions so that we could grasp what the author was trying to convey to us. By doing so I was able to have a clear understading of the material we were reading and my vocabulary increased tremendously.
