Study Abroad Programs in Belize

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes, I gained an appreciation for the teachers in that country. The teacher I worked with was very knowledgeable, used many affective literacy instructional strategies, and was very resourceful. It was very interesting visiting a parochial school. I enjoyed taking part in a different culture and lifestyle. It helped me appreciate the small things in my every day life that I normally take for granted. The most difficult thing for me was not having easy access to the Internet!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I would have liked to see what the schools look like in rural areas. We mainly stayed in the city.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It was fine. We were close to our school. The people at the hotel were very nice.

* Food:

Food was fine. We were on our own for morning, School provided nice lunches, Dinners were nice but too long. Quality/Quantity of food was fine. Peaceworks made sure we had water at all times.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Enjoyed seeing the Mayan ruins. I would have liked to visited a rural village. We spent most of our time in Belize City.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I certainly didn't feel free to go anywhere on my own. However, the Peacework personel worked hard to assure our safety wherever we went.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

There was no language difference. Everyone we worked with spoke English
