St Peter's College, University of Oxford - Visiting Students Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about the Brisiths academic system.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My Oxford experience was very exciting and inspiring. Oxford is a great academic harbor so I got to explore a lot and meet many talented minds. The reason I don't count it as perfect is that the physics course in Oxford wasn't a perfect fit for me in terms of structure and intensity.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Administraction in college responded very quickly and efficiently.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

College housing was very nice. Though I was living on the ground floor with very little light in my room even during a sunny day, I can't bother much since I had a private bathroom inside my room.

* Food:

I didn't go to college hall very often. The quality of food there was okay, and the price was a lot cheaper comparing to Brandeis and even normal UK standard. There are quite a lot of food options around the city.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

SPC is probably the best Oxford college if one wants to get socially integrated considering the vivid vibe of college bar and Junior common room (JCR).

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Healthcare is very accessible at SPC. In fact, healthcare in the UK, not just because it's free, was way better than the one in the US.

* Safety:

The center of Oxford, and the UK overall, is a relatively safe place. However, there have been assults reported, which is reasonable considering the high usage of alcohol.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Spending a year at SPC is an once a life time opportunity for me that I can never refuse to take.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Go to college hall more often can save you a lot of money.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
