Spelman College: Atlanta - Domestic Exchange for Visiting Students

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I think it was worthwhile. I learned more about how I handle stress and unfamiliar challenges, and how your environment definitely affects how you perform in certain areas both academically and personally.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

They had resources very similar to Wellesley's, but the work was not as academically challenging as Wellesley's.

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt somewhat integrated, it was mostly my job to integrate myself, and when I tried, I found myself generally accepted.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

They gave us the information we needed if we had healthcare problems, but I never needed those resources, so I'm only rating the access they gave us

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I would want a second chance to be more active in activities around the campus, not work so much, meet more people.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I had a job, so I wasn't spending much unless I was going out.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? less than $50
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I ate a lot in the dining hall to minimize expenses.

Comments: The work was all inclusive, we researched authors and how their lives impacted their work, and their peers work as well. We studied the connections between the authors we read, and not only looked at the novels individually, but collectively as a whole. We were assessed with papers, exams, and homework, as well as presentations. I participated in class less often than I probably would have at my home institution, mostly because of class size, but also because I wanted to hear the opinions of classmates I knew I wouldn't have next semester.
