Spelman College: Atlanta - Domestic Exchange for Visiting Students

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The courses I took were very interesting. I am glad I took them and was able to get credit for all but one course. The course load was not as demanding as a Barnard course load, but the material challenged me both intellectually and as an individual.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I was helped by my domestic exchange advisor with getting credit for courses and submitting the necessary paperwork for admittance into the school.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The dorms were accommodating. It was an adjustment getting used to the dorm rules and regulations of this very traditional institution. I stayed on-campus in an underclassman hall. Though it was sometimes annoying hearing the woes of freshman and sophomores, I was lucky to have a great roommate who was willing to fill me in on life at Spelman.

* Food:

It was an adjustment to get used to the heavier foods that were served at the dining hall. The dining hall had a basic variety of hot, home-style food, salad bar, sandwiches and a stir-fry station.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It was a plus to have friends who attended the school with cars. They were able to show me around with greater ease than taking the Marta. Going to parties and clubs was also easier as a result of students with cars as well.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The same awareness of your surroundings in New York City is necessary in Atlanta.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? The only thing that you might splurge on is food. You might get tired of dining hall food quickly and opt for delivery.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? N/A
