Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

To anyone considering this program -- the answer is yes. Do it. Studying abroad in Ushuaia was truly a transformative experience that exceeded all my expectations. The program provided an incredible balance between academics, cultural immersion, and personal growth, making it one of the most enriching opportunities I’ve ever had. The courses offered were well-structured, engaging, and directly tied to the location. Professors were knowledgeable and brought unique perspectives to the classroom. I especially appreciated the emphasis on experiential learning -- field trips, guest lectures, and hands-on projects made the coursework come alive in a way that I personally had never experienced. Moreover, one of the program's highlights was the effort to integrate students into the local culture. From language classes to homestay options, I felt connected to the community. The excursions were thoughtfully planned, allowing us to explore both popular landmarks and hidden gems.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program staff were exceptional -- responsive, approachable, and genuinely invested in ensuring our success. From pre-departure orientations to on-site support, they were always available to answer questions or address concerns. They made navigating a new country much easier, from handling logistics to offering tips on adapting to cultural differences. For example, my original flight to Ushuaia had gotten cancelled due to delays, but the program staff helped me coordinate new travel plans and helped me get integrated with the cohort even though I had arrived late.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Living in a new country pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible. I developed independence, confidence, and cross-cultural communication skills. I lived with a host family who could not have been kinder, welcoming me into their daily and family lives. I found that it very much enriched the experience and allowed me to have a cultural exchange where I learned about them and they learned about me. I was also treated often to family Sunday Argentinian barbecues!

* Food:

It's not hard to have dietary restrictions here. There is a large grocery store so you can buy and cook food for yourself with the program stipend. Meat is a large part of the culture, but if you are vegetarian or vegan it is not that hard. Other than that, the food on the program is really good.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

My favorite part about living in Ushuaia was being able to adventure and explore the outdoors. I did hikes on the weekends with my friends all the time to glaciers, mountains, beaches, etc. It was so amazing and freeing. The program also encouraged us to engage with locals, attend cultural festivals, and volunteer, which enriched the experience even further. There were also lots of community things to do -- of my favorites was attending the local international food and cultural festival, where a friend and I were able to try dancing and food from around the world!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not personally have any health issues on the program and Ushuaia was clean and healthy. We were required to have travel health insurance by the program.

* Safety:

I never once felt unsafe in Ushuaia and would regularly walk alone in the city at night to get back to my house.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Not only do you get to go to some of the coolest places on Earth, but you get to do it with like minded people who are down for adventure and learning about the environment. You get to speak Spanish and immerse yourself in the culture, learn from some of the brightest minds, and work with some really impressive professionals during your independent study month. Adventure and excitement is the name of the game!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The program stipend is more than enough.

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Buy food from the grocery store, be reasonable but not stingy, and save up what you don't use from the program stipend to buy your souvenirs at the end of the trip.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

We used Spanish all the time

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Fluent
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Fluent
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? AP Spanish Language
How many hours per day did you use the language? 10+
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? You should already have a basis in Spanish at the beginning of the program. But once you get to Ushuaia, make sure to engage and participate with your friends, classes, homestays, and community. You'll be amazed how much faster your fluency improves!

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
