* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? There has been so much speculation about the demise of Semester At Sea and I wanted to insert my 2 cents worth. I have just been on the ship, chatting with VP's and Trustees and the picture is not gloom and doom. Like many non-profits, Semester at Sea has struggled with finances the past few years. I'm told the program will revert to the original concept of TWO Semesters a year, Fall and Spring. Negotiations are ongoing regarding whether SAS will keep the ship, sell it and lease back for the two semesters, or some other arrangement being discussed. SAS will have a ship and will do TWO Semesters a year. The Board of Trustees is strong and supportive. The educational Sponsor University of Virginia and Semester At Sea mutually agreed to end their association, I'm told effective in 2016. There are several other institutions in current negotiations as academic sponsor. The interium CEO/President of Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) Loren Crabtree has a long association with the program and an impressive resume in higher education as well as Strong leadership. The program is alive, restructuring and offering extraordinary Global Studies programs with outstanding professors. Enrollment for Fall14 is strong and Spring15 is on target to be strong as well. Semester At Sea is still the premier Global Education Provider for university students and Life Long Learners. There is nothing quite like the excitement radiating from 650 college students walking up the gangway of the MV Explorer for the first time. It brings goosebumps to my arms and a big grin to my face. Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
